CV axle popped out of socket. Cannot pop it back in.
Ok...reread your post. The inboard side of the cv is out of the housing correct? If so, might be easier to pop the axle out of the tranny using a pry bar and taking the axle to a bench to get the tripod joint seated in to the housing. Use a rubber mallet to get the tripod joint back into the housing.

- Mark the positions of the shafts on both sides of the boot, so you can install it in the same position. The tripod will wear a bit over time, you want to reinstall the tripod in the same position, not 120° out.
- Make sure you have another clamp/clamps to reattach the boot.
- Don't spill any of the grease. If you do, no big deal, just clean all parts and replace the grease with the correct type and amount.

The tripod joint (the CV joint) is not a "fixed" joint that pops into place. The tripod male/female ends just slide in and out of each other. They don't "click in" together like the transmission side. So perhaps, you're just fine and just need to finish assembling?
