CV axle popped out of socket. Cannot pop it back in.

Hey guys, so I was replacing my struts and control arms, but stupidly manage to let the CV axle pop out of it's socket. Been trying to get it back in for 2 days. Watch a bunch of youtube videos that made it look easy to pop back in, but no so much for me. I'm considering just removing the cv axle completely and see if it i can it back in place outside of the car. Any ideas? this job is turning into a nightmare.

There is a circlip on the in board side of the axle spine that mates with the tranny. Make sure the opening of the circlip is at the 12 o'clock position when you are trying to get it seated. It might take a couple of trys but should be able to seat it fully. Be careful of the tranny side seal as not to damage it when trying to get the splines in. I suggest you search YT to see the procedure in practice before attempting it yourself.
Ok...reread your post. The inboard side of the cv is out of the housing correct? If so, might be easier to pop the axle out of the tranny using a pry bar and taking the axle to a bench to get the tripod joint seated in to the housing. Use a rubber mallet to get the tripod joint back into the housing.

the tranny side is still connected and inserted, it's just the tripod joint that is out. I've been spinning the disk and can feel it's in the right position, but i can't seem to push it all the way in. The boot is still crunch up so I don't think it's all the way in.

@GOPHIMBO yes, don't break that seal. May be a PITA but you know for a fact it can be installed without breaking seals

Don't be too scared to remove the boot, it's really just some rubber and a clamping holding it in place. There are a few things to consider:
- Mark the positions of the shafts on both sides of the boot, so you can install it in the same position. The tripod will wear a bit over time, you want to reinstall the tripod in the same position, not 120° out.
- Make sure you have another clamp/clamps to reattach the boot.
- Don't spill any of the grease. If you do, no big deal, just clean all parts and replace the grease with the correct type and amount.

Check MB document ar33.30-p-0690cw for all details as they should apply to your car.

Perhaps I'm reading this differently -

The tripod joint (the CV joint) is not a "fixed" joint that pops into place. The tripod male/female ends just slide in and out of each other. They don't "click in" together like the transmission side. So perhaps, you're just fine and just need to finish assembling?

It doesn't feel like it's all the way in. The boot is still crunch up and I can't align the hub to the strut. That's why I think it haven't slid all the way in.

not sure if I’m understanding the situation correctly, but wound opening one clamp, small one for instance, displace the air out when pushing it in, then you reclamp. That way you don’t have to remove the boot, would still need a new clamp and clamp tool.
