W212 E300 – Engine oil consumption with no visible leaks or smoke

Hi everyone,

I have a Mercedes-Benz E300 W212 and I’m facing an issue with engine oil consumption. The oil level gradually drops while driving, but there are no visible external leaks. I had the car inspected by a mechanic and nothing was found underneath.

However, when revving the engine at higher RPM, there is a noticeable burning oil smell, which makes us suspect the oil is being burned internally. There is no visible white or blue smoke from the exhaust, and the engine runs smoothly with no warning lights.

So far:
  • No oil leaks found
  • No coolant loss
  • No smoke visible
  • Burning smell noticeable at higher RPM
  • Oil consumption ongoing
The mechanic suspects internal oil burning (possibly piston rings, valve stem seals, or PCV issue), but before opening the engine, I’d like to hear from other owners.

Has anyone experienced similar oil consumption issues on the W212 E300?
What was the root cause in your case, and did you find a practical solution?
Is it generally safe to keep driving with regular oil top-ups, or should I be concerned about long-term damage?

Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You local specialist is on the right track with your oil loss investigations: PCV; dirty piston rings; (valves stems);...

Engine manufacturers recognize quarts of oil consumption as normal, to some extent.

A lot of vaporized oil consumption is done through the ineffective PCV system filtration.

-- How much oil consumption are you dealing with ?

-- What is your engine current mileage: 75k; 100k; 150k Miles?

-- What type of engine oil is in use: 5W30 /W40; W50?

-- What sort of driving style: City; /Hwy; /Racing?

-- How many miles between oil change: 5kMi; 10kMi; 1Yr ?

-- How long do you want to keep this car ???

-- What sort of repair budget limits do you have in mind for this item: $1k; $2k; or more ??

Lets see what simple solutions are available based on your answers.

I bought this car recently around 4 months ago, it has done around 170k km when i bouth it, I live in the UAE, I mostly cruise on highways at between 80-130 kmph with no hard acceleration. I did my oil change right away after buying it. now i have done 8000 kms. I saw the low engine oil warning after 7500 km done. As per my mechanic he topped up around 1.5 L of engine oil now I use 5W/40 here in UAE. As of now mechanic insisted if oil is burning it is better that i sale my car that trying to fix it up, if it is any sort of leak he would have suggested me to fix it up. They are specialized in mercedes repairs.

I feel I may find a good deal for sale in a month or two, until then I may do around 1500 kms more, is it safe to top up oil and drive more or should I totally stop driving it in this condition?

I have the same issue for E63 M157 and it's getting worse. Here is mine:

How much oil consumption are you dealing with ?
2014 E63>: oil loss 1Litre per less than 600km.

-- What is your engine current mileage: 75k; 100k; 150k Miles?
2014 E63>: 109,000KM

-- What type of engine oil is in use: 5W30 /W40; W50?
2014 E63>: LIQUI Moly Molygen new gen 5W-40

-- What sort of driving style: City; /Hwy; /Racing?
2014 E63>: Very heavy on the road and streets and it was on Comfort mode. Now switched to S+ mode for every drive from this week and evaluate the differences.

-- How many miles between oil change: 5kMi; 10kMi; 1Yr ?
2014 E63>: 3-5K

-- How long do you want to keep this car ???
2014 E63>: 5 yrs

-- What sort of repair budget limits do you have in mind for this item: $1k; $2k; or more ??
2014 E63>: Even thought to buy an used engine from ebay then to rebuild it for 1200 horse. Would my gearbox able to handle this power? I don't really think so, then TCU and gear or clutches must be moded.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

IMHO, I think it's totally fine to drive like this before you sell it. As long as you have your oil topped up and leveled at all times plus you don't drive hard, so I think you can drive this car for another 20K/KM wouldn't hurt at all. Make sure your topped up oils are :

Meet MB 229.XXX or 229.5 for M276/157 engines
same viscosity as 5W-40 or same to your new oil change

You have received perfectly honest advice about not dealing with this issue.

Attempting repairs may be an uphill battle for uncertain results. Remedial may involve cleaning piston rings, replacing PCV system and inspecting intake valves and cylinders bores.

The burning oil is building up carbon deposits that have been proven to score vertical grooves in cylinder bores. That increases oil consumption and crankcase blow-by until rear main seal gets blow-off.

If it is burning oil you should see smoke, but I say in your first post there is no smoke.

How about if your oil cooler is leaking oil in your cooling system. This can go unnoticed as if the cooling system gets level too high it will spit it out. Have you checked that you don't have oil in your coolant reservoir?

For what it’s worth, we see these higher mileage Mercedes not lasting very well in the UAE and warmer climates. The mechanic gave you good advice, but if you are looking to inspect it a little bit further, the postings above offer a way forward. If the bores were scoped, and there was no scoring, and just the Pistons are wet, you may just get by with short oil change intervals, and getting the rings clean, but if it is oil leaking internally into the coolant, it’s time to sell. I however, do not believe in selling a car that is broken unless I am fully disclosing what is wrong with the vehicle? Lastly, some of these engines just burn oil. They’re not an exact comparison but my AMG would probably need at least two extra liters in a 5000 mile oil change, especially if I was being speedy. If you look in the manual, you will see an acceptable amount of oil usage is about 1 L every 800 miles according to Mercedes. Some people never have to top up their oil and others of us always have to top up our oil.

Thank you for your time. I did change my radiator and coolant recently. I checked if the oil is leaking into the coolant reservoir but there is no presence of oil, however as far as I remember the coolant fluid looks a little pale now, I am unsure if this is the usual scenario. Will share a picture of what color it is when i get home.
