Exclamation A Bad Water Pump Could Do That

I have a major problem with the car yesterday and it turned out to be a bad water pump . I had a message on the gauge cluster to warn me about the loss of coolant . I was a few minutes away from home . I kept driving btw temperature gauge begun to climb but still staying below red spots . A few later, I arrived my destination and I stopped car . I could see the burnt smokes as well as smell the burnt thing . I popped out the hood and coolant was everywhere as well as burnt stuff (coolant ) . I called my mechanic and he inspected car . I thought it was a bad hose or radiator causing the leak but he said the car needs a new water pump as well as pulleys and other related parts . He started the car after topping it off with a regular water and I could hear some rattling nose that was not present before . I had not experience with a coolant loss prior to that either . It just happened within 10 minutes
Well, 11 years and 115K miles is a fair lifespan to me for a water pump.
I though I have to share my experience with you . If you see any message about coolant please don't ignore it

I'm sorry to read your coolant pump let go during the holiday seasons - At least it wasn't far from home base.

Do you want to do a comprehensive cooling tune-up or keep it short?
  • cooling pump
  • pump plastic inlet
  • thermostat
  • hoses upper/lower
  • serpentine kit with tensioner
  • (radiator!)
  • (expansion tank + cap)
  • (coolant/oil exchanger)

The engine heat accumulation is what's causing heat soak pressure may be seen by cooling fan running non-stop.

I cant find the image right off....but, my water pump impeller slid inward on the shaft. Mechanics said they had never seen anything like it (there are photos somewhere in the AMG W212 forum). Just two weeks ago replaced the radiator...been on going cooling issues.

And, HOT chicks spreading their legs at me.....

The impeller walking on its hot shaft is a standard issue with MB pump... you'll want to get to this before the day it shreds your accessory belt.

> STOCK SETUP...
-- The thing about engine cooling is heat is not only moved by smallish water pump.

-- A lot of heat gets accumulated in pistons unless it is circulated out through the oil heat exchanger.

-- Meaning most of the engine heat is not in the water but in pistons.

-- After engine stop, the hot pistons boil off coolant -- Heatsoak pressure burst radiator seams.
-- New radiator can not accomplish much to tame heatsoaks.

Speaking of legs :
-- Paradox... Fan roaring in Winter with a hot engine that never seem to cool off despite all the cooling power !?!
-- To get a leg up you need to spray-cool pistons effectively at driving Rpm else heat accumulates.

Smart doggies... learn to rest on their back like they see us do 👏

Thanks ,
I also talked about the thermostat but they said no need to replace it right now . We'll drive and see what's gonna happen . If I notice temperature fluctuations then thermostat is gonna be replaced too . We'll keep it short for now and hopefully will be enough to fix it

Hottest part after engine shutoff is usually the exhaust valves. They contain a lot of thermal energy. Combined with the exhaust manifold bolted to the head, the outlet side of the cylinder head is usually the first part where coolant can start boiling after engine shutoff. As this usually already is one of the highest part of the coolant system, it does not directly generate thermal circulation. Whereas the coolant surrounding the cylinder walls is still able to move upwards / move heat away from the cylinder wall and thus the pistons.

Anyway, a healthy coolant system should be able to cope with all these factors.

Well, a quick update :

The car is running like new , no more coolant loss as well as a steady temperature but we smell a coolant leftovers that's not funny but these should be go away after a quick clean up lol

Thanks all
