A Few W213 Questions..........

After reading every article I can find, I have not been able to really nail down the answers to these questions. Does anyone here know fo sure?

1. Will the new E have a REAR Cross Traffic Alert System, similar to the type GM has had for years? You know, as you are backing out of a parking space, flanked on both sides by enormous SUV's, as you look at your rear view camera monitor, arrows will flash and an audible alert will tell you that a vehicle or a pedestrian is approaching from your right or left. I rented a 2015 Impala for 30 days, awaiting the arrival of my new S550 and it had this feature. It was truly AMAZING and I was very disappointed that my new S didn't come with a feature found on a Chevy that cost one third the price of my new MB flagship sedan.

2. Will the new E have conventional or run flat tires and will it come with a spare?

3. Will the Panorama Roof be standard, part of a package or a stand alone option?

Thanks!

- not sure about #1

- Run-flat tires...no spare. Maybe there is space to add one?

- Pano roof is a single option according to the order guide. A normal glass sunroof is standard.

1) I remember reading that it will have rear cross traffic alert but I can't remember where I saw it. This was also a concern for me.
3) thank god they included a standard regular moonroof, unlike the C class

Just curious, why don't you like the pano?

^^ is that directed to me?

Either way, Ill answer Its not that I dont like a pano roof. Its that I dont even open my regular sunroof at all, not even a single day in a year. So I would never shell out $1000+ on a panoramic roof, where the money could go elsewhere for other packages. That being said, I dont think it is appropriate for a luxury car to not have a standard sunroof, so if the E didn't have one, I would be forced to include the pano with my order

I think it is ugly on any lighter color car. It is susceptible to squeaks and creaking. It makes the interior of the car hotter on hot days. I never use it. I really like the "tilt" feature on regular moon roofs and the Pano doesn't have it. In case of a severe accident, I don't like the idea of a huge mass of glass over my head. They have been know to simply crack or shatter, due to getting too hot or simply being hot and accidentally getting hit with a splash of water, in which case they are NOT covered under warranty. On my S, just the piece of glass above the windshield header costs $6,000.00, if you can believe it. That's ridiculous.

The Panorama Roof is a fine OPTION and it should remain OPTIONAL, for those who like it. My beef is when MB makes the frigging thing standard, as they have done on the S Class, or when they make it part of a package that the vast majority of folks want, as they did with the GLK. In the recently discontinued GLK, if you wanted the Premium 1 Pkg, which got you pretty basic things like a garage door opener, they SHOVED the pano roof down your throat. I liked the GLK and would have bought one, if I could have had it loaded, sans the Pano Roof, but no dice.

True luxury is the ability to choose a car, exactly as you would like it. With MB trying to be everything to everyone on the planet, they have taken many choices--which we USED to have--away from their customers, which I find decidedly less than luxurious.

Curious, the pano roof on my 212 E has the tilt feature, if I am understanding you correctly. That is, push up on the sunroof button, and the glass panel over the front seats tilts up, or "cracks open". Does your S not have this feature?

No, I mean like on a regular moon roof, where you can tilt up the rear edge, sort of like a vent.

Right that is what I was trying to say. My pano roof has this ability. Just the rear edge opens upward about an inch or so.

The new C Class W205 can tilt the Pano roof as well. No reason to think otherwise of the W213.

Rear cross traffic alert is demonstrated on the Mercedes website here.

Off-topic: With all due respect, my definition of true luxury is a car loaded to the gills with every conceivable option as standard. No options listed nor wanted.

On-topic: Creaking pano roofs and their fix are well-documented, but what's the frequency of pano roofs cracking / breaking / shattering while just driving down the road?

Well some of us order custom tailored suits, while others are happy buying off the rack. To each his own.
