W213 E Class problems

Hi there everyone, from a newbie.
I confess I have not read every posting on this 'W213 E Class problems - it's rather long! First things first - what do the labels W213 v S213 mean?
Roads in the UK seem to have deteriorated quite badly of late. I'm referring to the endless potholes being encountered.
I'm about to replace my 20" AMG Line wheels on my My E 220D AMG Line Estate (registered Jan 2017) for 17" MB wheels at the MB Dealer in Bath, UK, for the princely sum of c£2,200.
I should have done this when I bought estate 3 years and 3 months ago. Others told me it couldn't be done for one reason or another. Why am I shelling out all this money, you ask? If I'm lucky(?), when I hit a pothole I invariably have to by a replacement Michelin tyre for c£350. And if I'm unlucky, a further c£750 for a wheel - what you guys call a rim :-)
The poor customer service I've just received from MB Salisbury, UK, has caused me to go to MB Bath, UK - hopefully they'll be more capable.
I understand that fitting 17" wheels will give minimum clearance at the front brake caliper, but trust the Bath MB Dealer's judgement here. Can I trust him?
Believe it or not, I'm not fussed what the car looks like, I simply want a comfortable ride while I cure my neurosis [excessive and irrational anxiety or obsession] with potholes. Your thoughts please.
Oh, and when I do have to replace a wheel of tyre in won't cost an arm and a leg, ha ha.

Better if you check the factory approved tyres and wheels from this pdf, taking into account your options:

W213 Night Edition 220d. (ML250 SLK350AMG)
g'day Chris,
W213 means saloon / sedan
S213 means the estate / t-model / wagon
I have 19" with the E220D AMG line, and the 19 is very comfy even with our rough surface Aussie roads.
I don't know if you can put 17's on them, but I would say you could because they were in the brochure as configurable options. Maybe ring another dealer and ask them too, either in the parts area or service.

You might want to consider trying to swap with another owner. Considering that the 19s are a pricy upgrade I suspect that there would be more than a few people out there willing to trade with you (you might even be able to pocket some cash in the deal). 2k plus the price of tires seems pricy.

I have 2017 W213 on 17" wheels and the car is in the repair garage after I've hit a pothole in Potters Bar (just above London).
The whole nearside front suspension is being changed, both nearside wheels and nearside headlamp.
It was a big pot hole and so far the damage is £9000.... (going through insurance).
Otherwise the 17" are great for the comfort ride!!!!
Bigger wheels look better, but cannot compete on the ride quality.

Err, "a full set of tyres for this car is over £500!" That's cheap - if I replaced a full set of 20" Michelin Sport+ tyres on my E 220D it would cost me upwards of £1,400.

Get rid of the 20" wheels and NEVER use run flats!
I've got the same car - Jan 2017 E 220D AMG Line Premium+.
I'm in the process of replacing all four 20" wheels and tyres for 17" wheels and tyres, having spent a small fortune replacing pothole-cracked wheels and damaged tyres.
I'll say it again, please get rid of your 20" wheels and NEVER use run flats!

Nice pics. I see you really do have 17" wheels on your S213. And they clear the brake calipers by a mile? That's my concern at the moment, but the ball's in MB Bath, UK Dealer's court. He is fitting them, so he must know what he's doing? By the way, educate me about the "offset". Thanks. Chris

Tirerack.com has some good stuff on wheels and tires. See attached for a quick view and the full details can be found here:
Wheel Offset
Each car's wheel hub is a certain "depth" into the car and they specify a recommended offset that will result in the wheels at the correct level with respect to the body.

Yes, there is negative offset and positive offset. One pushes it inward and the other pushes it outward. I pushed it outward plus went a little wider on the rims. Calipers has lots of clearance. Also because they are forged from a solid piece of aluminum, it requires less material, lighter weight and much stronger. Well worth it, although more expensive.

W refers to the saloon model of this type of e class, S is the estate. W213 is called the Baureihe Nummer of build class number in German. The Coupe is C238 (all coupes are C) and the Cabriolet is A238 (all convertibles are A). Fixed folding roofs (SLK) are W designation. There are other variations but this covers 99% of mainstream MB cars.

The autobahn is not that smooth! The best motorways these days are reserved for the Netherlands - far far smoother than the Autobahn. Personally I have 20" alloys with air suspension and the ride is fine (even in UK)!

Seem like many models made in 2016 have ghostly problems that MB had to fix on my car under warranty. Many of the issues you had (except the sun glass holder) had to be fixed by MB except the alignment issue, which I figure out on my own.

sorry to resurface an old thread, but how did this go for you? Did the 17s work for your AMG line.
I’ve been getting conflicting answers myself. I have the 19in staggered on my amg line. Fuel door card lists 17s as an option and the MB parts site lists the 17s as compatible when I run it VIN.
do they clear the brakes?

17” wheels on an E Class
Yes my friend. The 17” wheels work perfectly on my GM66CVD. (I’ve given you the reg so you can check out exact specs on my car via the web). And you’re dead right about the fuel cap detail - MB refers to 17” wheels on my E Class for good reason. They fit!!!
So, go ahead and buy 17” wheels with confidence. If it helps, MB Bath fitted mine, so that should be further affirmation for you.

I managed to pick up a set of the standard 17s over the weekend for 270€ incl tpms, sure they could use a refurb and a new set of tyres but really can’t beat the price. As I’m sure you’ve seen most people are trying to shed their 17s in favor of 19s, 20s.
glad to know they’ll fit. Now just need new tyres and a refurb, then putting the 19s away for winter (and a refurb too).
