Tempremental Ambient Lighting

Hi all,

Can't believe I've only just found this site

Anyways, just wondering if anyone knows how the activation for the ambient lighting works?

I've got a 2017 E220, and sometimes, I find that the ambient lighting across the dashboard does not always come on. The footwells and door handles do...

It doesn't appear to follow any kind of trend? Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks in advance,

as far as I know it should always come on but maybe it's difficult to see during the day. (especially if you chose a natural colour...)

Probably a bum connection or LED stripe. Common problem with LED rope lights.

Thanks for that

I was starting to think I was doing something daft, I'll give the local dealership a call.

Cheers!

If the lighting doesn't come on try adjusting the brightness up/down....this seems to wake mine up. I'm using it as a short term fix for now.

Does it even illuminate during the daylight? I've never seen it although it is set to turn on.

Yes...not triggered by headlights or lack of daylight.

I keep my lights on the low setting. It goes to full brightness whenever the door opens.
Once I close the door, it dims back down low to where I have it set.

Quick up-date - my car went back in for a second attempt to resolve the ambient lighting issues but without joy....having been in-touch with Customer Service they advised the following:-

"I was sorry to learn you had been experiencing issues with the Ambient Lighting in your car. I can confirm the software update designed to cure this matter is due to be released in December, subject to change. I appreciate you have been left disappointed with this time frame; however, I can only offer my sincerest apologies."

Not a happy bunny!......anybody else had similar?.

Hmm... While working OK, I had an update that messed up the lightning: sometimes only door handles would come, sometimes the would be all turned down etc... and when it happened i had to manually go to ambient settings, change ALL CAR to 4 then back to 5 to get them working.
Last month another update came and fixed the problem. Best option would be to update the ambient lightning software and SCN. And for second question, for my europe 2017, ambient is always on really, does not cross-link with lights...

Your symptoms are very similar to mine, however, the dealership loaded the latest software and it didn't cure the fault.

What I have done is selected the 'Brightness Zones' option in the settings menu and it appears to be working fine and appears to be stable (for now!)....you can set all of the zones to the same brightness.

I'm experiencing the same issue in mine (less then two weeks old). I usually check the Multi color checkbox and it starts to work but changes colors obviously. Unchecking the Multi color checkbox makes it work again till the next time I'll start the car.
Very annoying.

E43uk, what do you mean by selected the brightness zones?

Yes. The ambient lights colors are being changed automatically between a few colors (depending what you pick in the color scheme)

Brill, I’ve got my fingers crossed for you. I assume that by selecting the zone option a different software path is taken, a path which works!. I’ll still be pushing for the December software update as should everybody that is experiencing issues.

2018 E300 here, same issue happened for roughly 3 times during my first week of owning the vehicle. Dealership reloaded the software and now it works flawlessly. Third week in now btw.

umm...a software reload didn’t work for me...i guess that’s why MB won’t commit to a Dec resolution.

i have to say I feel quite forgiving because I love the car and, for now, the lights are working.

Hi took my car in and of course the lights were working. They told me that they loaded an update but when I went to pick up the car the lights were not working. Luckly, the service manager was there and he saw it and after a restart they did not come on again. They have kept the car for another day to look into this. They don't seem to have seen this so I am not sure why only some cars are having this problem.

MB are aware of the problem and a software update is due to be released in December....if/when you get the car back unresolved, as stated above, try selecting the 'brightness zones' option....having done it, mine has been working fine for the past couple of weeks.

Thanks. I just got a call from the dealer confirming what you said. Mercedes knows there is an issue and is rewriting the software for release in December. I will try the brightness zones option and see if that does the trick for now.
