How to get a smoother ride from your E300-Luxury Model

I purchased a 2018 E300-4matic about 3 months ago with Goodyear Runflat tires. The inflation sticker on the fuel door said that inflation should be 32psi front & rear, which I adjusted as the sticker advised. Well, the ride was loud and bouncy and just awful, it road like an old pickup truck with bad springs. Well I was quite disappointed to put it mildly. I paid a visit to my dealers tire dept. and I was told to keep the tires inflated to the maximum inflation pressure shown on the fuel filler door which is 33psi front and 39psi Rear. Sure enough the ride smoothed out and became quite pleasant, almost as smooth as an S class, the improvement was definitely noticeable. I inquired why such a big and positive difference. I was told that Runflat tires by default have much stiffer side ply walls which allow them to run for an additional 30 miles or so with a puncture, which is fine if you have a flat tire, but if you don’t then you can expect a tire that will run fine on a straight away but as soon as you make a turn in either direction then you have a tire that has no give in its’ sidewall, hence it will run like a non-neumatic or solid rubber tire like those on a tricycle and if all your driving is done in the city or suburbs then you’ll be turning left or right most of the time. So if you have Runflat tires give this fix a try, it worked well for me.

it should be 32 all around. and also very interesting is that ive driven the sport and luxury back to back and there is no real noticeable difference in the suspension. In the C class the sport and luxury is a night and day difference....

I often switch between 32 all around and 33/39 when I have a heavy load (every week or 2). The 32 all around provides the best ride for a light load (1 or 2 people). I use the higher pressures when carrying sports equipment (800+ lbs.) in the trunk.

Ok, you've got my curiosity. 800 lbs?

I keep my tires set above the recommended 32 psi all around, and find it more comfortable. Obviously depends on many factors...springs, airbags, run flat or low profile tires, road conditions, more or less aggressive driving style, etc.

See my reply to riamga today on the thread "pirelli run flat tires?" On my C300 Luxury suspension, improvement continues up to 40 PSI. (That's what my gas flap sticker says too! However, my misaligned gas flap had to be replaced, and maybe the dealer replaced it with an AMG part. Well, what's good for an AMG is good for me. The main differences with an AMG are not in the suspension.)

It is a set of kettlebells and weight plates. I will try leaving tire pressures at 33/39 to see if it makes a difference.

I'm trying in my mind to figure out why over inflating the rear tires would give you a smoother ride.

If run-flat tires give a rougher ride due to stiff sidewalls ,then I would think stiffening the tire more with extra air pressure would just exasperate that.

The weights are actually a bit more than 800 pounds consisting of a 352 pound kettlebell set and a 500 pound plate set. You probably don't know what a kettlebell is so here is a link. Believe what you want. I bet you couldn't lift the 40kg kettlebell let alone swing it into the trunk.

I only drive a couple of miles with them in the car. If I had a truck I'd use it. I'm trying to sell them at a Saturday market. Maybe this week.

So Mr Andretti you are saying you put at LEAST 363kg or 800lbs in your trunk or boot and then drive down the road hahahahahahaha.......
i would love to see you load your boot up and then go down the street.
Mario how about a few photos of a your loaded up trunk and the car going down your street.

You are right about one thing i have never in my life seen or lifted a kettlebell.
My back is not 100% fit only because i worked for 26 years on a big fishing boat and the constant pounding seas has stuff my back up i will never lift one as now days i try to be careful.
Well Mr Andretti keep lifting your weights and do be careful to look after your back as you are putting the 800+lbs in your boot.

This would be a first that increasing the tire pressure improved the ride. I was running higher pressures on my W212 because I hadn't reset them for the hotter weather and rode like crap until I lowered them to the spec on the door.

Overall this cars suspension is crap compared to the C-Class, Ive driven many loaners from C300 Convertible to 2015-18 sedan and they all drove better then the E, my C350E that weighs more then the E300 drives better. Also, the GLC is very smooth even though its a mini SUV with those huge tires. My dealer recently dropped the air pressure down to 32 and it drives worse when I had it at 32-39. Cant wait to get rid of this car.

I complete agree, not even asking for a sporty ride - it just has no character at all. Not very Benz like.

The interesting thing is, I had a E400 coupe loaner for few weeks and that was like driving a completely different car, it felt like a true benz. Dont know if it was the extra weight of the engine smoothing it out or what they did to the suspension. Smooth as silk and drove like a true benz. The engine purred as well.

y E300 ride is superior to the C Class models. That said, I tried the higher tire pressures but they made the ride much harder than I like. I'll stick with the 32 psi on all four corners.

BTW - I sold the weights ($1 per pound) so I don't have to transport them to the Saturday market anymore.

Maybe the acoustic package that you have makes a difference??? Or maybe the tires that we have on our cars are different and thats what makes the cars different.

I had 2 2015 C300 4matic Sports, and that is an impressive car. The interior on the E class is far superior but the C class in general is a complete package and drives/handles very well for what it is.

one thing you have to consider also is that when the tire is over inflated, the center of the tire will wear out more than when properly inflated. the tire will be shaped like a U and the center will touch the ground more than an even distribution,

Update; With the combination of a smoother ride over rough surfaces and much better steering feel, my 2015 C300 (W205) now rides and handles like a luxury sports sedan should. For those of you unfamiliar with Mercedes classes below the E-Class, the W205 C300 (beginning with MY 2015) is a true luxury car. No more "near-luxury" or "executive compact" put-downs.
