Question Rear Facing Baby seat behind driver. Clearance?

So I'm currently looking at 2017 E400 Wagon models because my current Audi S4 Avant is too small for me to fit our rear facing baby seat behind the driver's seat (which we're going to have to do because we have a second one coming). I'm 5'10" so not excessively tall and I'm hoping the E class has enough rear seat room for this. However, based on some of the stuff I've seen from my various searches, I'm not so sure anymore. I read somewhere that the W213 seat back is bigger than for the W212 and this eats up a lot of space.

Anyone have pics of their rear facing baby seats behind the driver's side instead of the passenger side? Or can describe whether they fit or not based on their height?

Ultimately I might just have to go check one out in person and bring my baby seat with me and see. Just wondering what others have experienced.

Hello and welcome! No shame in taking the seat in to see if it fits. I did that once when looking at a 2011 CLS. Ended up buying an E550 of the same year. (Back in 2011) Good luck to you and the family!

Thanks. Every search I try with "rear facing baby seat e400 wagon" ends up showing me results about the rear facing third row instead of anything about the fitment of a rear facing baby seat in the second row, especially behind the driver instead of the passenger.

The best thing to do is take your seat into the dealer and try it. I've done that with various things such as luggage, etc. The dealer doesn't mind.

There is so much variation amongst child car seat size and personal seat adjustment I agree you should head to a dealer. That said, I have some experience here. We bought a W212 when our first child was on the way. After lots of research we went with Chicco keyfit carrier and compatible accessories. I’m 5’9”, but with long arms and torso, so while I don’t have the seat pushed way back (although it feels that way switching with my wife as she’s 5’), I do lean my seat back pretty far and lower it as low as I can. This put the seat back top in the worst possible position for limiting child seat size. And it fit fine. There was almost no gap to spare, but it fit without touching the front seat back. When we replaced the carrier with a huge Chicco nextfit (still in rear facing mode) it also fit. I replaced the W212 with a 2018 E400 wagon and paid particular attention to child seat fit me t as I now have 2 little ones, one that was rear facing at the time. No problems at all with the same child seat models. In fact, the S213 added a touch more space with one exception, the top of the seat back seems a little deeper. Now both kids are front facing. Definitely get seat covers and seat back protectors. I got a weather tech cover for the whole second row. Someday my munchkins will get to sit on the designo leather seats and use the seat warmers, but it won’t be any time soon.

Maybe you should search for the same in S213 instead? E400 is identical to E200, E63 and all other 213 wagons. There is no reason to limit your hits to only the same engine as in your car.

I’ve found that some baby seats are a lot more compact than others, so I agree a trip to the dealer would be best.

So just a follow-up, I did end up checking the car out with the baby seat and tested the fit. It's tight but workable so I ended up buying the car.

They're just so practical for families. I already have a station wagon but it's a little too small (S4 Avant). It was fine with just one kid but with a second on the way, I needed the bigger E class.
