Assuming they're correct, you wouldn't be able to fit a 285 wide tire on an 8" wheel. You'd need a 9.5" to 11" wheel.

245/40 R 19 on 8 J x 19 ET 20 Front (your current wheel and tire)
275/35 R 19 on 9 J x 19 ET 49 Rear (new wheel and tire)
Surprisingly, none of the current AMG E-Class wheels are styled like the non-AMG E-Class AMG-line wheels, so I don't know that you will be able to get matching, wider 19" wheels to match your current wheels. While I understand you wanting to use the current wheels, and use MB OEM wheels, that may not be possible, and get the wider tires/wheels you want.
The full-AMG type option would be to trade out all wheels to 20", and there are two groups of sizes available should you wish to do that:
245/35 R 20 on 8 J x 20 ET 43 Front
275/30 R 20 on 9 J x 20 ET 49 Rear
or
265/35 ZR20 on 9.5J x 20 ET25 Front
295/30 ZR20 on 10.0J x 20 ET55 Rear
Before you poney-up for 4 new OEM MB 20" wheels, you may want to check price, styling and quality of after-market wheels. Some of the look /very/ nice.

P.S what does the J on the wheel size stand for (offset?)
Sorry for being a knucklehead, also which chart do I look for at Tirerack.com

If you look on the size you mentioned at the beginning of the thread the 285/35/19 it has a overall diameter of 26.9 inches. When you compare that to a stock front tire size of 245/40/19 it is 26.7 inches, so very close but not exact. Not really sure if this would be acceptable for the 4matic or not being off just a tad bit as it is. Since that rim you showed more than likely came with a 245/40/19 inch tire it more than likely is too narrow but if you were able to get a pair of rims that were used as the rear wheels on a cabriolet or coupe amg line those19 inch rims would be wide enough for the tire you mentioned. All in all though, I'd say it's probably not worth it and your probably best off just going with the stock size on your stock rims. My wagon seems to handle fine with the more narrow tires and cant tell much of difference between it and my Cabriolet with the wider rear tires. If you had those 285's already might just be best off selling them and put the money towards a new pair of 245's.

You could get new aftermarket wheels on all four corners, thats what I did with my Wagon, I got the Mandrus 23 wheels in 19 inch. Sharp looking wheel. I just got the Gun Metal Mirror Cut finish to keep the price down, they were around 300 per wheel, so 1200 total. Interesting the tire that matches up exactly to the rear tire number you gave, 285/35/19 is a 225/50/18, they both have a Outer diameter of 26.9 inches so that would be fine for the 4matic drive system and give you a better ride as there would be a sidewall meat on the front wheels. So you'd be getting 9.5 inch wide rear 19 inch wheels and 9 inch wide 18 inch front rims. The fronts being a little bit more narrow would give the appearance of the rears being even wider plus you could get a lower offset number that would kick out the wheels a little bit to give the car a little bit wider of a stance, thats what I did with my car although it's hard to tell from the side profile pic here. I think mine was 36 ET. Factory calls for 43 ET at least on the 213's.
