2021 All Terrain Order Guide

Hi All,

An Internet sales manager I'm working with sent me the 2021 All Terrain order guide. I'm not really fond of this new vehicle and want to get a left over 2020 wagon but thought I'd share as others might be interested in the vehicle.

Thanks for sharing.

The cladding, low profile wheels and lack of a luxury version are all deal breakers for me.

That does not appeal to me, guess I'm keeping my 2016 for longer than I thought.

Hopefully MB will add some additional equipment to be more competitive with the Audi A6 Allroad.

I'm looking to lease and the residual on the 2020 A6 Allroad was terrible. The residual with 12K miles / year was only 50% while the same parameters for a 2020 E450 was 55% which is a difference of around $4K priced the way I'd get them.

50% residual for 12,000 miles is very, very low: That is in Ford and GM company!

Are there incentives on the Audi that make up for the low residual or very low MF?

I just looked at the quote and I was wrong, it is 49%. Here is the residual and MF:

Residual is 49% Money Factor : .00092 12K Miles/Yr

MF = 1.99% which is not cheap.

Any incentives?

Nope. They did offer $5645 off MSRP which was $71980. Then they added a ton of fees (totalling $1494) and an acquisition fee of $895. Sales tax here in Texas is 6.5% of sale price which added $4218. So bottom line was $72494 out the door.

Different subject, I was surprised to see the acquisition fee for an E450 wagon I looked at was $1095 which I thought was crazy. Dealers set the acquisition fees for the vehicles they lease and to me that was stretching it and bordering on robbery.

I have been leasing for over 35 years:

MF: this is set by the financial arm, but can be adjusted upwards by the dealer, so important to check other dealers to make sure you get best MF.
Residual: set by the financial arm
Acquisition fee: This is the first time I have seen a dealer adjust that. This may be something new.
Sales tax: dealer collects

Just some of the myriad of reasons I no longer lease. I buy what I want and keep it long term so money factors and residuals are irrelevant to me. Audi has notoriously had unattractive lease terms compared to MB and BMW. I was referencing standard equipment and features such as 4 zone climate control which is not even available on the All Terrain.

Living in Texas and pretty much always having my dogs with us, the 4 zone climate control is a nice to have feature, that as you said is standard on the Allroad. One can get 3 zone climate control with the E450 wagon and its something I'll be looking for.

The All Terrain is growing on me - I like the standard air suspension and the 20 inch wheel option. I agree, the loss of the standard wagon and especially the Luxury version is painful, but I like the All Terrain better than most SUVs.

Agree, its better than an SUV. My internet manager guy told me unofficially that the base price for the All Terrain is going to be in the low $68K whose increase is the same price as the 2020 base price with the addition of the $1900 air suspension option.

You are not alone. Send an email to MB customer service stating what you don't like about the All Road, and ask that they do market research, perhaps contacting current E400S and E450S owners.

I did this, and got a canned response saying they understand that not everyone likes the available options. I think they are going to **** off a lot of long term wagon fanatics with this half baked concept.

The reality in America is that people prefer the raised and cladded wagons over regular wagons. Look at Volvo, where they offer the V90 as both a regular wagon and as a Cross Country wagon in the US. In 2019 the Cross Country sold 1,007 units and the regular just 500. While I prefer the look of the 2020 E450, the 2021 All Terrain will most certainly outsell it.

Subaru's Outback, the first of the "raised station wagons" is their #1 seller.

No reason to doubt that the new Mercedes All Terrain will outsell the old E450 station wagon.

They're aiming for people who want a Subaru Outback but also want something nicer than a Subaru. I get it. I just don't like it.

I don't consider the Outback a station wagon (although they do). It's higher and bigger than my Acura RDX and many other full-fledged SUVs. A station wagon is supposed to be a wagon version of a car, and while it started out that way, there's not been a car that's 66.4" high for a very long time. MB's version is only about a half high higher than the Sedan. That part, I like. Most SUVs (like the RDX) have a step in height (ground to sill) of about 19". That's higher than the average chair seat! Makes it VERY difficult for my 5' wife, and not easy for me, to step into. I have an E450 wagon, and wish it were a couple inches higher, so don't mind that part. We got her a 2019 Kia Niro, just about 60" high, which makes it the perfect height for both of us.

Dear RRaisley:

I have to hand it to you: You really do your homework:

Height of Subaru Outback is 66.44 inches:

see: https://www.google.com/search?q=heig...hrome&ie=UTF-8

Height of Acura RDX is 65.66

see: https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C...ebUAVgQ4dUDCAw

Most of us would have never noticed the .78 of inch difference!

Glad you brought that to our attention!

I will keep that .78 inch difference in mind when I look for a SUV

Uh, you're rather missing the point, JTK44. Yes, the Subaru Outback "wagon" is 66.44" high. The MB E450 wagon is 57.7" high. The Volvo V90 wagon is 58.1" high, while the Cross country version is 60.7". The Audi A6 Allroad is 56" high. The Jaguar XF Sportbrake is 56.9" high. All those are "wagons". The Outback is NOT. It is 6-10" higher than normal wagons.

Your opinion only.

Most disagree:

Read the literature on Subaru's website and Edmunds and/or KBB.com. It is listed as a "sensible alternative" to an SUV.

My wife will not drive an Outback: in her mind it is a station wagon and not an SUV and she will not drive either a station wagon or a mini van.

Your wife is only 5 feet tall and has different requirements than "most." So your frame of reference is different than "most", and Mercedes is looking to sell cars to "most".

Regardless of sensible alternatives and literature, it is a fact that the Outback's dimensions and features are far closer (mid-range in fact) to that of an SUV than any other wagon made. And Mercedes's "most" fits my wife just great, as would any other wagon, other than the Outback. So "Most" wagons are very similar - except the Outback. Put it in line with the rest, and it's clear to see that "one of these does not belong with the others".
