W213 Ambient light issue
Hello! Previously when I used to unlock the car either with the key or use the keyless unlock, the car's interior lighting and the ambient light turns on, and stays for a while until I start the car. Recently I noted that, when I unlock the car with my key or keyless using door handle, the interior lights turn on, but not the ambient lighting - until I start the car, and then it comes on. Am i doing anything wrong? I think I fiddled a bit with the Personalization and created some profiles.. and I also did a reset of transmission by pressing the gas pedal (instructions in youtube)...
Or is this expected behavior with all cars?

In that case try turning it off and then turn on the ignition, turn it off again open the door and close the door.
After that, try turning it back on incase it was just a glitch.
You could also try changing the setting via Mercedes Me and see if it helps.

Thanks for everyone who responded... I read at several pla es and figured out that this is a software issue and it happens when you reset the tcu (transmission) / or sometimes during switching profiles...
I also figured out that I was able to reset by doing this..
Turnon, go to light settings (mine is old firmware).. Changed the individual zones to 4 and vehicle to 5, then turned off, exit and lock (I noticed that ambient lights now stayed on, previously it went off immediately after turning off ignition), then locked the car, allowed 5 mins... Now when I unlock with key or without key, the ambient lights turn on!! Not as bright as before, but that's OK!! Also, all others like puddle, reading etc turn on...
Bad job mercedes on software bugs. Really bad!! But good that we have these enthusiastic forms!

Is it region dependent or your vehicle never went for COMAND updates? I only recall the earliest versions of COMAND having that minimal amount of customization for ambient lighting but I might had mixed it up with another vehicle. What COMAND version is your vehicle currently running?

That explains it, even for a 2017 it is very likely there are software updates available and the newer COMAND versions are compatible with the vehicle (even ones that adds features like controlling the ambient light brightness, welcome light, climate effect etc. hopefully. Was there a particular reason the vehicle's COMAND version was never updated?

Can someone explain what the "welcome" lighting actually entails? I have that setting activated on my 2020 E450 and for the life of me I don't perceive any special lighting effect when I open the car. Is the ambient light supposed to do something, by chance? I do see the illuminated door sills briefly brighten and then dim a little. Is that it?

It is supposed to turn on and with default white led when you open the door and it slowly turns to a different colour (if I remember correctly, that colour is the ambient light colour you set to and then stays that way, if you don't start the ignition after a while it turns off to conserve battery).

Glitches happen, try turning it off and turning the feature back on again. First turn it off, get out of the vehicle lock the vehicle and then wait till everything turns off, unlock vehicle and turn the setting back on.
