Wagon market?

Hey All.

I'm thinking about moving out of my beloved 2018 E400 wagon (lux trim, piedmont/nut brown/walnut burl...). It has been an amazing car but time for something smaller.

The market is so weird right now...lots of boring/basic spec wagons listed in the low 50's. Hard to tell what a more interesting example might fetch...I know the lux trim is less desired by the masses but for those of us who love it, it's so much nicer than the 'amg lite' trim...

Curious to hear where you guys would list it if you were in my shoes (BaT? Carsandbids?), and what you'd be starting at for asking price?

Never heard that before, but I love my car, won't say it is so much nicer than any other
trim however..

Yes - horses for courses...
In fairness, though, my statement was proceeded by "For those of us who love it"...

A pedestrian car for BaT or sites like it, wouldn’t you say? It’s just an E400. Nice car, but not on par with others on those sites.

How about Craigslist, the local dealer or cargurus?

I would have thought so, too, except for watching recent action on those sites.

There have been three MB longroofs on BaT recently. All had quite a lot of action in terms of bids. Only one was interesting in terms of color/spec.

I think MB discontinuing the non-all-terrain wagons has probably accelerated their momentum into a different corner of the market. It's definitely a niche car, albeit one that's still relatively accessible.

Here is a link to four current CarGurus E400's. Wagons are at the precipice of the wave IMO. Sell high.

Ha - true. But, well.. you did choose to open it...even to add to it!

I don't think there's another thread here covering the unusual market dynamic for these cars right now. At least not one that I could find.

Lots of questions about new orders, etc. I'm honestly curious what people are seeing for real prices, cars moving, in their areas, given that there's a 50% spread for similar cars when you search the big outlets.

Bought my 2019 Wagon early November 2021, paid $68,800.00 including tax, registration and a 4 year after market warranty.
6,700 miles with new tires, a new battery and a fresh service. (Had to haggle for 3 hours to get that price, they wanted
$4,500 more. BMW/Rolls dealer, the Wagon had been sitting on the showroom floor 41 days, hence I could negotiate)

I am finding few people even know the Mercedes is producing a wagon. When I explain the advantages of a wagon over a clumsy, truck like SUV, they are almost always enthused.

Paid $66,000 pre-tax for my 2019 E450 wagon in early September - AMG line, driver assist, lighting package, pano roof, full airmatic, leather, active seats with massage, 19inch wheels. 12,000 miles - exterior in great condition, some wear on the driver's side interior B pillar trim - I would call the interior "very good" condition, but not great. Original sticker - $83K, so I think I overpaid, but I really wanted it.

hi Lanzz
do you notice a difference with the full airmatic compared to your previous wagon...the full airmatic is now standard as i understand it on the AT

Martin, I feel a difference with the full airmatic, especially since the wagon has the 19 inch wheels. I had the same wheel/tire setup on my 2017 E300 and the ride was really harsh - handling was great - but you were reminded of every bump. The airmatic takes that harshness away and preserves most of the great handling that the 19 inch wheels enable. Also, I like the ability to raise the car slightly - we rented a house in the NC mountains and the driveway had this odd angle - raising the car enabled me to drive in with out scraping the front lip under the bumper. We also have the airmatic in our 2019 E300 - that car has the 18 inch wheels and the ride is softer and bit more floaty, but still (I think) an improvement over the steel suspension car. I am sure I will be crying in the service lane at some point when the airmatic car is broken and sitting on the ground... but until then, I really think it is worth the extra money. (and now with the AT, it isn't even extra...)

my lease will be up this summer and I am looking at a new vehicle. I have driven the new s class and also the AT. I am leaning to replace mine with the AT.It is cheaper and very practical but the s class does appeal to me as well. However at the moment my dealer is trying o get an allocation for me for the wagon but i do want to make sure that whatever i get has all the features that I want. I turned down an s class earlier in the week because it did not have the massage multi contour seats due to the chip shortage and i assume there will be similar shortages on desirable features re the AT...oh well I am waiting to see what the dealer can come up with and then I will have to make a decision. As my wagon is working very well and with only 40000kms on it maybe i should buy it out at the end of the lease at approximately 43000 CDN

Purchased a CPO 2017 Diamond Metallic Silver Luxury E400 with 39,186 miles on 8/27/21 from MB of Buffalo, paid $47,500 without tax, dealer fees, etc, the car on MB CPO site & others, think was listed at $50,000 called offered the $47,500 to include the extra 2-year CPO, they came back next day and accepted the $47,500 and would split the cost of the 2-year with me, which I believe was about $1,300. I accepted and had the deposit put on my AMEX. Dealer confirmed deposit and that the car would be taken off the to sell inventory. Purchase was a cash deal.
Car was detailed way beyond my expectations - (I detail my own cars, I'm VERY OCD about it) the car was flawless, absolutely ZERO scratches or swirls. Interior matched exterior - looked new - even the miserable black center console had ZERO scratches.
Had complete Carfax, MB of Buffalo was 2nd owner, car has only been serviced at MB dealers VMI confirms this.
All the folks at Mercedes of Buffalo were super to deal with, wish they were closer. Car was located 500 miles from home purchased sight unseen.

Mercedes wagons are in demand and I'm sure BaT and C&B would take the listing (especially C&B since Doug D. is a big fan of wagons). But it takes a lot of work to list (including the listing pictures, etc.) and responding to questions and comments can be a full time job while the auction is live.

Martin - it feels like if you want an AT, buying out your lease to give time for the supply chain to normalize a bit so your new car isn't missing features. Doesn't feel like much of a risk to buy out your current wagon - trade in values are strong and you certainly won't be suffering while you drive your current car for a while longer...

yes Lanzz my sales guy is suggesting extending my lease until the supply chain normalizes so unless something miracously happens that i what i will most likely do

Thanks everyone. The pricing data in particular is helpful.

I think what I'll do is list the car around $65K...that is a price we'd be happy to get, and I have a feeling someone will be happy to pay that, if they love the spec/color combo as much as I have.

Asking for a friend -- how much would you discount the same wagon (2018 E400) with a front end collision that deployed both air bags? All repair work done at a MB repair shop so looks good as new except for the Carfax report that shows the collision.

Druid, it feels like even the best repair would take 20% to 25% off the value - I would consider a car like that if I could take it to a trusted shop for a pre-purchase inspection and if I was going to keep it a while so it mattered less when I wanted to eventually sell it. Given the state of the used car market right now, I would get moving and sell it while there is little to buy - if anything, this market gives your friend a shot at more money than he'd normally get for that car.

I am in a similar situation with my 2019 E450 Sedan,(not wagon) Luxury styling, MSRP just over $70,000 US.: My lease, $896 a month including bank fee, 2 year pre-paid maintenance and NYS sales tax ran out in December, 2021. MBFS extended the lease until the end of February, 2022 at the same monthly payment. My car has only 24,000 miles and 10 months of factory warranty left. I have already replaced two tires because of bubbles and the two original tires still have 7/32 of tread life. My buy back including taxes is $43,000. Next service is the "A" service, $225, at 30,000 miles probably not until November/December of 2022.

MBFS will extend the lease if I have a purchase order for a 2022 until it arrives. Problem is the monthly payment on the 2022 E450 will be $1,250, $350 a month more than I am presently paying. If I have equity in my car that would reduce the monthly payment but requires me to sell it privately as my dealer says my car is worth about $45,000 although cars similar to mine are on Cars.com for $55,000. I can order and cancel if too many features I presently have are eliminated, including hands free trunk, rear cross traffic alert and full digital image.

My dealer advises that I can finance the purchase through MBFS, for 47 months at 1.99%. I think that is what I am going to do.

Just my $.02 on this subject.
