Oil Consumption warning

2020 E350 here.

I was sitting at a red light the other day and fiddling through the service panels when I noticed that the oil was a bit low (no green light in the graphic)
I topped off a quart when I got home, green indicator returned. This lead me to consider that I did not understand how the low warning for oil circuit functioned. From personal experience in this case I had to say it doesn't function.

Does anyone else have any experience on low oil notification?

Mercedes must have started using the electronic oil level indicator in the 2020 E350, my 2019 still have a dip stick and no electronic level readout. From pass experience, I prefer the dip stick.

i had it a few times when accelerating a bit fast;
it would tell me to immediately cut the engine due low level. however oil level was fine according to the service display

when i asked my dealer about it, they said that it might be fixed with a software update

will have the address it on my 1s service as so far have not had any further warnings

Thanks G Man. My 2020 still has a dipstick too. Although I hate the design of it. I would have liked the old fashion flat metal one compared to the dark colored barrel design. I just think if the electronic circuit suppresses the green indication, it should also throw a message.

Egonvdv,

It was hard to determine what car you are referring to.

Where are you seeing the electronic oil level then? When I go into my service menu from the steering wheel, I do not see a oil level menu. Are you looking at oil temperature in the engine data screen?

BTW, are you sure your car has a dipstick. To the best of my knowledge my 2019 E450 does not.

Correction and update:

My 2019 E450 does have a dip stick: It is purple in color, driver side at the rear of engine. Very accessible. My last oil change was 5K miles ago. The reading on the dip stick was perfect.

It seems that this electronic function was added in the 2020 model year in the E class. I have the luxury edition but I doubt it would be a part of those options.

I had a few cars with those electronic dipsticks, one of my BMW had a lot of issues with the E dipstick, One time I had to get the dealer to drain and measure the oil and found that I had over filled but E dipstick still reads low. I much prefer the manual dipstick compare to the E dipstick.
