4MATIC Different Tires Front/Back?

Hi There,
I recently got my 2017 E400 4MATIC's tires replaced, but the tire dealer recorded the vehicle as a rear wheel drive and said there should be different tires for the front and back. From experience, I thought front and rear wheels should be the same on all wheel drive cars, or am I wrong?

The current front tires: 245/40-19
The current rear tires: 275/35-19

I've noticed that I've had to replace the front tires at least 3-4 times each time the rear tire is replaced (the front tires wear out much quicker).
More interestingly, on the side of the door, MB recommends the same pressure all around. But the tire dealer recommends higher rear pressure than front tire pressure.

I'm very confused and any help would be great!

it’s not unusual for MB cars with 4Matic to have a staggered tire setup. My 2016 C300 had different size tires front/back. My current E450 Coupe has the same size tires all around. Both are 4Matic.

The dealer is correct, you have stagger setup, rear tire is wider. The front tires does most of the stopping so it will wear out faster. I have equal PSI all around, for heavy load or high speed, I bring the front up 3 psi and the rear 6 psi.

I too am very confused:

I have a 2018 E450 with 18" wheels and the same tire size all around. The standard set up for a Mercedes E300 and E450 is the same size all around - so what you have is a modification - it is not standard.

As to tire pressure, the pressure on the gas fill is to be used: but in your case with staggered tires, this will be no help - so your guess is as good as any.

As to tire wear: this is truly a puzzle: I have a 4 matic and the rear tires after 20,000 miles had 2/32 less not more tire tread as compared to the front. This is to be expected as the 4 matic is primarily RWD. From my over 60 years of driving experience I have found that the driving wheels wear out faster than the non driving wheels: If FWD the front tires wear faster, if RWD the rear tires wear faster. For example on my other car an AWD Ford Edge Sport where front drive is primary, those tires like the rear on my Mercedes after 17,000 miles had less tread than the rear.

Just my $.02.

The OP is from Australia, maybe the staggered setup is an option there.

Just went to my car and below are the tire pressure recommendations as per the fuel fill:

Hope this helps.

The main thing is outer diameter. Many mercedes use a staggered tire setup (AMG line) the size may be different meaning the rears are wider than the fronts but the outer diameter is similar. This is why tires sizes should not be changed from what came with the car or what it calls for on the fuel door.

Our cars have brake force distribution so the vehicle brakes and stops in a more neutral manner so not sure why front's should wear quicker.

Because they do all the turning? My fronts always wore faster with a staggered setup.

brake force distribution will keep the front end from nose diving during hard braking but the front always have a heavier load to stop, its the law of physics. Try to stop while you are running, the front of your foot take most of load.

it's not an 'option'. It's forced onto us and rammed down our throats.MB Australia for the longest time has been offering mostly 245/35r20 and 275/30r20 staggered setup in 14 spoke AMG alloy wheel on their E220d and higher models. Apparently it's the 'market preferences' here to have big wheels with harsh riding narrow tires.
