Oil pressure low, immediately stop engine (red warning)

Oil pressure low, immediately stop engine

Fault code I was able to catch

Hello,

I hope someone has similar experience but, I’ve got a 66 reg e220d, had an oil pressure low immediately stop engine light come on the dash and turn off. No messages or fault codes up until yesterday which I received a fuel pressure sensor fault. Cleared and hasn’t come back.

had the car since 13000 miles and now 77000 miles. Have changed the oil level sensor at around 35/40k. This fault has been intermittent from when I purchased the vehicle at that mileage and went a way a good while up until recently where it’s happening a little more often than I’d like. It’s on random occasions too, nothing that’s triggers it from what I know.

I was confused due to the fault code which seems irrelevant to the oil pressure fault I’m randomly seeing?

anyone got any advice on this?

kind regards

First you need to figure out if you have a bad sensor again or if actually have low oil pressure.

Vehicle drives fine, it’s a strange one. It doesn’t always happen, it’s very very intermittent which makes me think it is a sensor playing up.

I may have to bite the bullet and send it to merc to be diagnosed. It’s out of warranty but as a tech I like doing what I can to fix my own car!

it stopped for a good while after I changed the oil level sensor which is strange again since it’s not really got to do with oil pressure. It was changed maybe 25-30k ago max.

kind regards

Did the car gave you a oil pressure alarm the last time two times you had to change the oil level sensors? If not, I would start by checking oil pressure.

Seems like MB has ongoing issues with the oil sensors they are using in their engines. I had this issue right from the factory with my AMG. Mostly got the yellow warning to add a quart of oil, but at one point got the red warning, too. Oil level was fine. Thankfully the AMG engines still have a dipstick. They replaced the oil sensor and it was fine until the other day. Now I keep getting the yellow warning again. Mostly on long highway cruises. Never when I'm driving the car in anger. It's exactly the same symptoms that I had the first time around. Just booked the car in for service next week. It also had a misfire on cylinder 7 this weekend while I accelerated hard onto the highway. Strangely I was bombing through a canyon road just moments before w/o issues, but the tank was down to 1/4, so it might have been fuel starvation. I usually don't let the tank get this low when driving hard. Anyway, I'm guessing my oil level sensor has gone bad again, and probably unrelated to the misfire.

I had the alarm come on around 17k, randomly would come on but not as often as it has been now. Changed the level sensor at around 33k. Didn’t seem to see it very often. Come to around 77k, doing more local journeys and now it’s more often happening.
I’ve changed the level sensor once at 33k

swap a spark plug over from 7 mate and see if it follows according to misfire so from 7 to 6. If it moves to 6 it’s your spark plugs mate but you’re right about that level sensor. Could have packed up again for me too

Yes, spark plugs is a possibility. If I'm not mistaken I'm actually due for spark plug replacement next service in January. I've also heard a faulty O2 sensor can cause this. The ignition coils can also be problematic on the AMG engines.

yeah all what you said can cause a misfire too but for it to be one cylinder I’d put my money on a spark plug mate. I’d be looking into that prior to anything. If you decide to take it on yourself see what spark plugs are in it. Sometimes manufacturers use ****e ones mate I’ve seen it.

if it’s not that, look into coil plugs too. Or ignition coils as you called it. My money will be on a plug though especially since they’re due mate. Good luck getting that beast sorted to its potential again im sure you will
