2019 E-450 Wagon
Wagon ONLY question:

Got a 2019 E-450 Wagon, low miles.
Stiff Run Flat Tires.
Lusting for Michelins AND a small spare kit like this:

Looking under my trunk floor, there is a well for a spare, but an aluminum bolted on stringer seem to be blocking
full access.
Question: Is the stringer structural, OR only needed for kiddie seats in the back?
I will never need the 2 backward facing jump seats, would like to remove them but keep the flat floor.
Any ideas how fo fit a spare and jack back there, remove the jump seats and keep the floor?.

W213 - E220d. W212 - E350 wagon
I removed the rear facing seats from my W212 wagon.
Made up some 10 inch wide boards to fit in the hole with some support feet. Covered the boards in carpet and then cover the whole floor with a flat rubber mat.
Lots of extra room under the boards where the seats were.
Just be careful removing the seats, take a video of how you do it so you can restore the seats before you sell the car.

In Europe they do not have the rear seat. I do not know if there is room for a tire.

Ivan, was it easy to remove the seat pads? Wass it obvious how to do it. Thanks phil

I replaced my factory all-season runflats with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 tires (non runflats). Of course that means I would need a spare tire in the car, and I need to find a space within the car to house it.

Yes, that is one way of doing it, but I planned on using only the existing parts, just removing the aluminum bracket, if easily done without getting under the car and if the piece is not structural.

Looks like plenty of room for a compact spare, but not a full size wheel. (After the aluminum piece is removed.)

Yes, the ride is FAR better. Since these XL rated Michelin tires are much lighter than the runflats, the car feels lighter on its feet too. Handling improvement is striking.

Noise wise, I believe it is a wash. The new Michelins do have a hum, but you get used to it, and then you don’t notice it at all.

Thank you for this thread. I hate the runflat tires and would change them out in a minute if I had some place to keep a spare. If the aluminum brace can be removed there is definitely enough room for a temporary spare and maybe even for a full size spare. For my V70 R I purchased an extra wheel to use as a full size spare and it easily fit in that well. The donut went into the garage never to come out. I have thought that the aluminum brace is only there to support the foot well of the third seat. It would be good to know what prevails in other jurisdictions where run flats are not used and the third seat is an option. My F-Type is even worse.

Yes, the alu brace is probably for 3rd seat support, I will research part diagrams and dig a bit deeper. (pun not intended)
In the meantime: Does the used Run-Flats have any value: They were mounted just before I got the wagon, about 4,000 miles on them: I hate to throw away expensive tires, but I could..
How much are the Michelin's, $300 each?

They do have value: Put them either on Craig's list or EBay.

The E63 has floor panels instead of rear facing seats, so that part should be easy.

Pretty sure those of us with ATs are out of luck, though…IIRC we have a big battery under there.

W213 - E220d. W212 - E350 wagon
Removing all the rear facing seat accoutrements doesn't require getting under the car. It's pretty straight forward and logical. You do need to remove some plastic trims.

My W213 came equipped from the factory with AMG 20 inch wheels even though it's a standard E200d.
The interior is AMG as well as the body kit. Not AMG or sport suspension.

I removed the AMG wheels and replaced them with W222 (S class) 18 inch staggered.
Running Michelin PS4s at the front and Pilot super sports at the rear. Not Runflat.
I carry one of those compressed cans with sealent - just in case.

I do many 2000K trips in the car. If I have a puncture or tyre failure with the runflats miles away from a fair sized city I'd be in a fair amount of bother. 20 inch wide runflats don'tgrow on the local tree.

I too would like to remove 3rd jump seats, but no idea on how to do it! Get rid of run flats - unfortunately just replaced the tires 4,000 miles ago. I don't mind the ride, tough to screw up the ride on a E400 Luxury wagon, but the noise drives me crazy.
Still if I could put a spare in I would and get a new set of tires.

Yes, I believe the 12V battery is housed under that space, which is a bummer, if the intent is to put a full-sized spare tire into that area.

I personally like to buy a full-sized spare, and use that in the tire rotation, so that the wear on all 5 tires (4 on the car and the 1 spare) are even. Of course if we have the staggered tire sizes like in the 20”, we would not be able to do the rotation, as outlined above.
