You do as you wish. I will never purposely use an oil that is not approved for use in my car.

To put your mind at ease, next time you have the dealer change your oil, ask for the container the oil came in to make sure it is not Mobil 1 but Mobil 1 ESP X2!

Oh: you better watch them actually put in the oil, because the dealer may "ghost" you and show you the container without you knowing if the oil in that container was actually was used!

My dealer takes oil from an 50 gallon drum. I have no idea what kind of oil they use, but I suspect it is made by Mobil.

But for me, Mobil 1 is good enough!

Is anyone here using a heavier weight oil like 0w30 or 5w30 in warmer climates? I'm on 5k intervals but am interested in an oil that actually coats the engine components sufficiently. I'm not the EPA and couldn't care less about fuel economy. I save gas with a zero mile commute.

2022 E450 4Matic.

Thanks in advance,

maw

EDIT... NVM... dealer has been using 5w30 for all the time of the warranty (purchased service package)... maybe I'll move to 5w40 afterwards... again, I'm interested in protection not gas mileage.

My dealer claims lighter weight oil is required as the oil passages are narrower on newer engines, and the new inline six requires 0w20 per waranty. Not sure why they don't like 0w30. Meets the right approvals. Guess mileage is worse. Would not want to have to argue with them if they denied a waranty claim based on wrong oil.

Zero weight oil is only for gas mileage, not longevity, I've used 10W-40 in my W212's for 13 years of oil changes, never had any leaks either, If you insist on a lower weight oil, 5W-30 or 5W-40 are better choices for engine longevity

That's my experience as well. If the dealer has been using 5w30, I'll be going to 5w40 or 5w50, which is the same as all the other cars. This car lives indoors so the watery thin stuff isn't necessary for cold starts + I actually expect the car to last not get turned in after a few months.

From google search. For the 256 engine. 2022 E450:

Primary Spec: MB-Approval 229.71 (0W-20)

Fully synthetic Mid-Low SAPS (necessary for Gasoline Particulate Filters)

Commonly Used Approved Products:
 • Liqui Moly Top Tec 6600 0W-20
 • Mobil 1 ESP x2 0W-20
 • Genuine Mercedes-Benz 0W-20

Heavier weight oils are approved under spec
229.51, but i am confused about that as these oils are primarily for diesal mercedes engines.

I would like to use a heavier oil but my dealer said that is not complying with the waranty, which does not appear to be accurate, but I do not want to have to argue with the dealer if they refuse a warranty claim. That is an argument you cannot win

People need to be careful with AI... the machine models don't have any manner of differentiating between good information and bad information. They just analyze all available information -- expert, non expert, trolling, completely unqualified opinion -- it all looks the same to the LLM.

Here, this talks about PRIMARY spec... not the ONLY spec.

BIG difference there.

And yes you need to pay THAT much attention and read their "analyses" THAT closely.

Otherwise you'll run off thinking the world is flat or vaccines are poison because a bunch of people were hotly debating it in some idiot chat room.

I have used both Castrol Edge 5W-30 K European Vehicle Full Synthetic & Valvoline 5W-30 XL-III European Vehicle motor oils that also cover the Mercedes Specs for the M256 straight 6 petrol engines that are equipped with a GPF gasoline particulate filter. They also offer 0W weights if that what you're into. Years ago, there were only a few choices that covered those MB specs. Now, quite a few oil manufacturers are producing "low ash" version motor oils as more petrol/gasoline vehicles are equipped with an GPF's so thankfully, choices are improving

From Valoline's site:

"Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic Motor Oil provides low-SAPS Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus, and Sulfur) formulations to protect the sensitive exhaust after-treatment system and improve its performance."

"Reduced Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus, and Sulfur levels protect diesel particulate filters (DPF) and gasoline particulate filters (GPF), preventing costly system failures while maintaining emissions compliance."

This is why one should use Group IV true synthetics like Mobil One and AmsOil, both are Sulfur free PAO oils

viscosity is essential

Beware that viscosity plays an important role with the hydraulic control of camshafts VVT's.

A fresh W30 "euro oil" soon shears out of grade as a W20... seriously sub-standard for powerful turbo engines.

0W; 5W; 10W; 15W; 20W : multigrades are related to cold starts.

Premium MB approved 5W-40 lubricant (**)
Premium MB approved 5W-40 lubricant (**)

Does your model year engine support 5W-40 grade?
If yes use the Approved Motul PAO 5W-40.
A superior lubricant with extended Hi/Lo temp range compared to basic Group-III "Synt." blends.

** : other options available with a more consistent viscosity that derates into upper W40 range.

(I run a 5W-50 PAO)

This is a premium PAO API-SP oil with extended lo/hi heat range - Great match for demanding turbo engines.
