Back in the club: E450 Wagon
Found a great deal on a low miles, 2020, CPO E450 wagon with the options I’d want — including leather which has proven to be harder to find.
Getting it shipped this week. Should have it by the weekend. Very excited.

Has 19 dual spoke AMG’s, AMG int/ext, Lighting, Parking, Pano, Multi contour, etc. It’s nicely equipped.

Model year 2020 was the last of the true E-Class wagons before MBUSA decided on the All-Terrain nonsense for all.
I really, REALLY miss my Macchiato/beige/cream interior of my last MB. I couldn't find the same on my new one... can't win them all.

Some of the early build 2021 models (built during the Covid era with supply chain disruptions) had defects, but the ones built subsequently, in the later 2021 model year onwards, are sublime. Point to note is that the 48V mild-hybrids were being equipped into the S-class in much earlier years, but came to the E-class in 2021 and are now also present in all of the GLCs.

You are also correct that the early models had problems with the batteries, many of which had to be replaced.
Where I disagree is when you say this is the future of the ICE: actually this will be the last ICE that Mercedes will be producing. No further ICE are planned. Going forward Mercedes will be EV
And the mpg of it truly amaze me. 😳
I got 36.9 mpg on a 200 mile highway trip .
And I would say it is less complex when you look at all the belts and sprockets that went away.
Does the 2019 have 2 turbos vs 1 ??

IMO this won't happen. EV issues will get worked out and the current set of problems with the vehicles themselves will eventually get fixed. However, I am not convinced that any govt mandates about EV production will ever be enforced - they will move the dates out slowly but surely to the point that manufacturers will continue to release updated engines and new ICEs. The market is starting to come around and most of the "EV fans" already have satisficed their curiosity. The new market's taste for EV's has soured a bit (at least for now). Combine that with the lack of infrastructure (or a plan to change the current infrastructure) to support adequate charging and my gut says ICE are not going anywhere soon.

All OEM have to decide where to invest their money: I do not see any OEM putting R&D money for new ICE's to come on the market for 2030 and beyond. For third world countries and the Middle East where electricity is not readily available, one can make the argument for the continued production of existing ICE vehicles. (I was in Russia in the late 1990's and saw 20 year old Yugo's being driven) For Europe, China, Australia. the US and Canada, in my opinion NO. In 7 years sales of new cars will be 90% to 100% EV.
Just look at the continued damage to the world's climate that ICE contribute to: 20 consecutive days above 110 in Phoenix, two 1000 year storms in the past 8 years in New England and catastrophic flooding. Forest fires in Canada. Extreme heat throughout Europe. Ocean temps of 90 degrees and above in Florida. Tornados throughout the SE of the US and even as far north as Chicago. Insurance companies refusing to write insurance along gulf coast states and California.

Mercedes has in fact been putting in new R&D money into ICE's as shown by the announcement of the new CLA (https://mercedesblog.com/mercedes-cl...he-first-time/). It is starting out as a an EV but in 2026 it will also be available with an all new Mild hybrid 4 cyl ICE (M252). This engine is designed by Mercedes and will be built in China and it looks like it will replace the current generation 2.0L engines.
The reports of Mercedes' ICE death are greatly exaggerated

Having said the above, in my opinion, the All-Terrain just adds a couple of inches of much needed ground clearance (takes it to 6.2 inches, which is still WAY below that of any cross-over out in the market) to the "classic wagon". Unfortunately, it also has the totally un-needed black claddings (in Europe, my understanding is that they offer an option to make the claddings of the All-Terrain, body-colored, which would be my personal preference).
My All-Terrain has been spot-lessly trouble-free in well over 2 years of ownership, and reliability-wise is exactly the same as my completely trouble-free 2019 Honda Fit with a Stick-shift transmission. I plan to keep it for the next 10 years.
