As long as the oil meets the MB specifications brand doesn't matter.

Yah, I'm another one that gets M1 oil.
Tell the dealer you're trying to save money too and go somewhere else

MB makes cars not oil anyways so someone else is making oil and putting MB labels on it....

IT just has to meet the MB spec for your engine.

Mercedes doesn't actually make oil. That's Mobil. Standard oil at the dealer is Mobil 1 5w40. If you're not at a Mercedes dealer, then they could be using any oil. But as long as it meets MB specs, it should be fine.

my local dealer was sued because of this and settled in a class action. I received like a $20 dollar settlement as a result. Anyway, now the work order papers say they may not use genuine Mercedes parts on there.
Granted it wasn't only about the oil, but you can read about it here.

If you run the search function this issue of which non MBZ oil were MBZ approved substitutes has been discussed and documented extensively in the AMG fora for CLK/SL 55s. A few years ago we went full on MBZ oil nerd and really dug into this. IIRC we kept our oil nerd party hats on and then dug into approved MBZ substitutes for othe fluids as well. Enjoy.

Ok I had a sec to take a look and, while not drawn from the thread that I had in mind, here are both the US and Global approved MBZ oil lists. Note these lists get periodically updated by MBZ based on whether or not more oil companies submit their products to MBZ for approval and also when they re-formulate their engine oils and re-submit products for approval. If you ar really hyper about it triple check for the latest list as occasionally, very occasionally an oil will drop off the approved list because it was either re-formulated or discontinued. After you look at the lists which are tailored to engine lines, you'll see that Mobil 1 is there as are Motul and others on the Global list.

Here is a good place to start: https://operatingfluids.mercedes-benz.com/

Just have to remember the certification matches and depending on the frequency of oil change, distance commute per trip (does the oil ever reaches operating temperature), the state (does it snow or is it always hot) the temperature and humidity, the viscosity also matters.
