Rear camera problem (open then close)

I have rear camera problem. Everytime I start the car and put it to reverse my camera pops out and then close itself. In screen I can see camera is working and also opening system is working when its able to close itself. When I try to open it again it doesnt work. Also when I try to open it by settings it doesnt work. To make it work again I need to turn off engine start it again put it to reverse or open it by settings. But it will close it self again after one second. 🤣🤣 Do you have any suggestions 😔

The RFK insist about messing with you.... open then closes.

This is a great job for your local MB Specialist or perhas your favorite scanner can scan your car for a saving.

Hi I have the exact same problem on the W205. Did you find a solution ? I replaced the opening mechanism with a new one, it didn't fix the problem. Any Help?

Digging this up from the dead..... i am having the same issue. Reading codes, there is a "Camera system malfunction" when that happens but it does not get into detail.

The Camera motor is controlled from the Rear SAM.

Might be wiring
Might be signal.

Doubtful it is the open/close motor as the motor is just DC based and not brushless so no fancy electronics.

REWORKING GLITCHY RFK

When enough light grease has evaporated from the cover mechanism, the electric motor surges the power of the electronic control that gets glitchy.

This module has the longest wires of the whole car.

Try to help this work well with a shorter GND + Not undersized power wires.

Camera and RFK(camera cover motor) are two separate modules, if you see camera cover is open, and close smoothly, but still no camera image, check camera fuse, replace camera etc. If cover not moving when R, then check the RFK, 205(PreFL) RFK is controlled by a module called CPF222, not directly by Rear SAM, 205(FL 2019 onward) is by Rear SAM.

wish you solve your issue soon.

If you don't want to do a "try-replace", you will need to diagnostic your car properly or find a local workshop to do it for you. I use @BenzNinja as many here. He helps me fix my cars and it's free lifetime once you signed up.

HI Elebest

Appreciate the input.

The issue i see is that the Camera and Cover are operational but as soon as the car starts moving in R.. the Camera closes but the image stays up for a few seconds than throws the no image picture (Camera image with a "Cancel" sign). I am about to tear the rear bonnet trim, i am thinking at least on mine is wiring related.

Ask another person to help you shoot a video when you in R and moving a bit.

So you can see how it behaves. It might be wiring issue.

Decided to take the trunk molding off and investigate. I saw nothing but since it was open, i took apart the connector for the camera and the 4 pin connector. Sprayed some contact cleaner on both Also decided to remove the camera from the drop down and check it incase there was frayed wiring but no issues found. Buttoned everything up and no issues with the rear view closing while reversing. Lets see if it was this simple a fix! (fingers crossed)

The reverse camera drop down/cover is a perfect example of Mercedes over-engineering. I've had reverse cameras on several cars and none of them had a cover. I guess the cover is to prevent the camera from getting dirty, but on the other cars, when the car got washed, so did the camera -- so the camera lens got cleaned. Not so on the E class. To clean off the camera, which I did a couple weeks ago when the picture looked kind of hazy, you need two people. One to put the car into reverse with foot on brake, while the other person cleans off the camera. As the old saying about Mercedes goes, "overthought and over-rought."

To clean the camera lens, the W214 has an open camera function in MBUX just for that purpose. Maybe some of the W213s do as well. Agreed that it's over engineered in some cases, but my W214 rear camera has never needed to be cleaned in over a year while my W212 had to be cleaned every time I drove in the rain. The cover seems to work for the intended purpose.

I didn't know this. I checked the manual, and it states that you access this function through the multimedia display -- so they did think of this issue. I suppose I should activate this function whenever I wash the car so that the camera lens gets washed also. BTW, the car is over 7 years old and this was the first time I saw the need to clean the camera lens.

Comand has the open rear camera cover also without reverse.

You can also open the camera by going to the parking camera and selecting the rear camera (wide or narrow is fine). Both with open the cover for cleaning.

Happy and peaceful 2026 everyone. I have an intermittent occasional problem with my rear view camera on my 2017 E-Class Wagon 220D S213. Occasionally, and generally - but not always - after rain or car wash, my rear view camera will not operate, I get the round red symbol with line through camera icon. Sometimes this can happen early morning and resolve itself 10 mins later, other times it happens for 2 days constantly. But when it's dry and warm it doesn't happen.

I have had main dealer replace the camera, and this did not resolve the issue, I then had main dealer replace the Parktronic head unit, and yet the problem persists. In addition, the software has been updated. Car has been purchased new from Mercedes and all servicing and work done exclusively by main dealer so a good relationship exists. They have suggested the next step is to replace wiring loom Part A2135404276 which looks to be a large loom the length of the car. I imagine this is a large and costly next step, and I would appreciate if anyone here has had this done and did it resolve the issue?

My gut says my problem is related to moisture, and as the wagon boot is used everyday I would imagine if there is cut wire the issue would be close to the hinges or the camera flap.
Appreciate if anyone here can share some knowledge or any thoughts own what to do next?
