SERIOUS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM WITH NEW E CLASS W214

Hello Guys,

Hi, I have a HUGE issue with my brand new e220 d 4matic e class (w214).

Realized this at around 800 kms.

Problem:
Right before the car stops, the whole car shakes. Sometimes very softly, sometimes harder. The strength of the shaking varies. I feel like down hill shaking is mostly more pronounced.
To observe this behavior the car should come down from 2nd to 1st and then to a whole stop. Slowly..

They have been trying to figure out the problem for 2 weeks. No luck.
Seems to be related to gearbox and/or transmission.

Note:
This is something you cannot realize if start/stop is activated.

As a previous 5 series owner, I am so much regretful that I switched to e class (
Anybody has experienced anything similar, anything that could be related to transmission or gearbox?

If suspected transmission, did they take a sample of transmission fluid or very least scan the computer for codes?

I have the same issue. It's gotten better over time, but I still feel a slight "kick" when slowing down from 2 to 1. It was mostly solved after the dealership did a standstill adaptation on the transmission. The dealer told me after the standstill adaptation that they thought it was the ISG motor disengaging, and there was nothing more they could do. They did say that it would likely be fixed with a transmission software update. I'm going to the dealer again soon as my transmission has started shifting rough and slow and will sometimes bangs itself into gear from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3.

From your description, it's not clear what you are experiencing. When you say "the whole car shakes", do you mean violently like something is physically moving the car back and forth or is it a vibration coming from some area of the car? Also, what exactly is a "soft" shake as you describe it sometimes does? I'm having a hard time visualizing what you mean based on your description. When you say it "cannot be realized if start/stop is activated" what do you mean by that? Does it only happen if you have the start/stop feature turned off? I assume you have it at the MB dealership where you are (Turkey?) and that they are investigating the issue.

Regarding your question, I have not seen this issue with my 2025 E450 and I haven't heard of others complaining about this type of behavior other than rp5611 below but their issue does not sound like it's the same thing at least based on your description and theirs.

Is it the same issue? Sounds like yours is much less severe than the OPs. You describe a slight kick when slowing down from 2nd to 1st which sounds like a rough down shift. The OP is saying their car shakes which sounds much more extreme unless I am misunderstanding their description.

They did some "adaptation" to my car too.. nothing changed.
You are saying it "got better". I am saying it should not be happening "at all".. this is not acceptable..
"there was nothing more they could do.." --> I think you need to ask for a refund or a new car..
if things come to that, that is what i will be doing if they do not offer me those options themselves. I know i am legally entitled to ask for those..
I cannot accept a faulty/defected car.. this is not acceptable. you should do the same..

Hi wolf, I think my account was kinda suspended for a while hence the late response.
When I say the whole car shakes, it is not like a violent shake. It feels like the car wants to jump forward faintly, then says "oh, wait.. i need to stop..¨. And this happens twice before car comes to a whole stop. This creates a "shake" like behavior if it makes any sense.. It is not a vibration coming from another part of the car.. Feels like the car cannot decide what to do briefly and makes this weird move. A "soft" shake is when the car makes this move with less power. Sometimes this move is stronger, more violent/pronounced. I feel like especially downhill. But still not actually "violent".
Yes, this cannot be detected when start/stop is active. Because the car stops the engine before it is actually stationary (I think yours should do the same). My previous 530 would stop the engine, after the car got to a whole stop. This e class stops the engine right before the car actually comes to a whole stop, and that is the area (between the point engine stops, and the car becomes stationary) where this weird thing is happening. So the activated start/stop "hides" this weird behavior. That is why I did not realize this happening right away, but after like 800 kms.
Yes, I got the car from mb dealership and they have been investigating the issue for 3 weeks. Still, they have not been able to understand the reason, but they have accepted that this is NOT normal. Me and couple of guys from the service, we drove the car together and I demoed them the weird shake that happens right before the stop. And they acknowledged the problem.
And the weird thing is, if you do this "moving and stopping" (like you are in a traffic jam) trying to replicate the "shake" it will not happen unless you go up to 2nd gear, then back to 1 and to stop.. you have to go up a gear to experience it. You will not experience it if you start at 1st gear.
Could you try to see if a similar thing happens with your car. I mean, you don't have to if you are not using start/stop. Because without s/s activated, you would have seen it by now if you had it..

Update:
Feb 13: They asked for my permission to remove some kind of an oil reserve tank for transmission. They said this was not about opening/disassembling any part of transmission so I said go ahead.

Feb 18: They called me to inform that the problem has been relayed to Germany. I think up to this point all the discussions were between Ankara and Istanbul, which I did not know. It was taking days to receive a response, so the assumption was the questions were being relayed to Germany from Istanbul. This was the assumption of the service guys in Ankara, and hence this is how I was informed.
Now they are saying it could take 3-4 weeks to receive a response from Germany.
I don't know where this is going, but this is definitely not going well.
All preliminary examinations and potential solutions did nothing until now (I did not expect otherwise anyways). Feel like I have been being stalled. They are not paying any attention to what is going on. They have been very slow and unproductive.
My car has been parked in the service for almost 4 weeks now. And seems like it will be there for another 4 weeks.

Will update here as I hear further from Mercedes.

Update:
Feb 19:
Although they had called me on Feb 18th to inform me that the issue had been relayed to Germany, apparently they had done that couple days before. Maybe a week or so..
Because on 19th Feb (Wednesday) they told me they received the response back from Germany (which they told me previously that it typically takes weeks).
And the engineers in Germany decided my transmission was TO BE REPLACED.

P.S I got this information very late (a little later then 17:00) by accident. I had actually called them about another matter and figured out they had received Germany's response. (And the other matter was thatmy car was checked out of the service and they wanted to see my satisfaction with them. My car is still in there.. WHAT are you talking about?)

Anyways..
The worst case scenario has come to be true.
They have sold me a brand new mercedes-benz e class with a broken transmission ! (

I told them I did not expect the replacement and I deserve my car to re replaced with a new one which has all its functions working, including one of the most important pieces of a car along with the engine, transmission..

Update:
I have been dealing with this mercedes problem for some time... Here is an update..
Mercedes TR offered me some insignificant stuff to make me "give up my rights for going to court against them".
They offered 3 free periodical maintenances, and 1 year free warranty extension which totaled an insignificant amount of compensation compared to the value loss I will experience in the secondary market in my country. In return they wanted me to sign some papers to go to court against mercedes.
I knew they do PPF coating, window tinting etc in their shop, because they had tried to sold them to me when I purchased my car. So I asked if they could increase the compensation by adding stuff like ppf coating, window tinting, and guess what they offered to me in their response.. A garmin watch from their collection
This mercedes brand is laughable.. I am sorry guys, but this mercedes brand is a joke..
Omg.. How people exaggerate this brand. Mercedes has nothing special when you have a problem with them.
They are no better (if not worse) than any other "average" car brand out there.. I would expect a brand to act "premium" if they claim to be so.
A big disappointment. Nothing else..
Anyways, of course I rejected their "insulting" offer.
I asked them to replace the transmission (since they had already rejected my car replacement request and refund request), and told them I would go to court agains them for a devaluation compansation.
And this will be my last mercedes car I ever buy..

I suspect it is still possible the problem will not be resolved after transmission replacement.
They told me it would take 4 weeks for the transmission to arrive from Germany to Turkey.
Will post here the results...

Update.
After waiting for 4 weeks for the new transmission they have been trying to replace and test it on my car since last Thursday (April 10th).
Since it is taking longer then they previously told me, I have been calling the Mercedes guys since yesterday, asking about my car's status.
Yesterday they had told me that everything was alright. 30 mins ago I called them again, now they are telling me that the car is still making that weird "shaking".
This was the worst case scenario for me.
They replaced the transmission but the problem is still there.
It is like opening the chest and performing a heart surgery on a guy who does not even need it because of a wrong diagnosis.
I told them this before: "There are electronic components that govern the behaviour of transmission. Why don't we first check/replace them to see if there is a problem there before we change the whole transmission"
And they told me "Germany wanted us to change the transmission and we cannot question them".
Now we are at this point. A car with its chest opened, and still sick..
I am very very disappointed with Mercedes.
I am not sure where we will go from here..

Ok guys. I ended up returning the car to the dealership on April 28th and they refunded me my money.

I told them I preferred my car replaced with a new one, they "told me" they checked all the stocks in the country and they did not have any e220d 4matic for me in the stocks. I told them they could import a new one from Germany and that I would wait for it to arrive, they said if that was the case they would require me to make some additional payment because of the price difference in Turkish Liras.
So I ended up returning the car to Mercedes Benz Turk A.S. and they refunded me the original money I paid for the car in Liras.
I took a big loss at the end of the day (more than 20k$) because of the depreciation in Turkish Lira in 4,5 months.

I bought the new G60 5 series (520d xdrive). Works perfectly.

And I am so disappointed with Mercedes Benz Turk A.S.'s approach to the situation.
Not only the car, but also Mercedes Benz Turk A.S. as a company was a HUGE disappointment..
Sorry guys but i am never going back to mercedes again.
Never..

Wow! What an ordeal and very poor service. Sadly, service seems to be lacking in many companies these days. If the car has no issues or only minor ones its not that bad. When it has a major issue it often turns out this way. At least they bought your car back and didn't fight you on it. Best of luck with the G60.

Sorry to hear about the terrible experience, which is a shame because (imo) the W214 is the better car, looks better as well but the dealership and the customer service made you go to the "dark side" no star shining to lead the way, the "bright side" anymore

All the best with the bmw ownership hopefully (looks like the chance is slim that you will consider MB again in the future) if the customer service improves.

The adaptation has to be "stand still" adaptation, a specific type of adaptation, I wish I saw your reply earlier so I can suggest you to try that, it might had fixed the problem. I am so sorry about missing your post

Try the standstill adaptation, be specific, standstill adaptation, it requires different tries so yours and the technician's patience is important.

Very painful, so sorry to hear you had to deal with all this, I hope your ownership with your new car is much better. All the best! You deserve better.
