I don't believe 229.71/72 oil is even available with 0w40 viscosity.

Just finished changing the oil on mine, can confirm that it took 7.3. I used OE filter and plug, Mobil 1 ESP X4.

Did you just have to remove the middle panel (the one with the large bolts) under the engine to access the drain plug? Two cartons of Mobil 1 ESP X4 which I purchased online arrived today. I have not found this oil locally.

Yes, the middle panel must be removed, there is no access to the drainplug otherwise. There are 5 larger bolts, 17mm if I remember correctly, and 4 smaller 13mm.

Apparently, the oil level won't show on the dash unless the hood is closed? Small panic until I read that in the electronic manual... (this might be normal for MB, but since this is my first, I didn't know)

Mercedes updated their 229.52 oil sheet today. The 229.52 lists two Mercedes branded oils - only 0w-40. The Liqui-Moly 4120 is still listed and 0w-40 only, but not available in the USA. The Mobil 1 ESP x4 0W-40, to me, is the best choice. Same viscosity rating as the MB branded offerings, .51 and .52 compliant, and SP rated which is important for Direct Injection engines.

I sent an email to MBUSA about a week ago asking if following the guidelines on this web page would void the warranty. I got a reply saying some one would follow up with me soon. Have not heard anything yet.

I wonder what the difference is between 229.71/72 and 229.51/52. My understanding is that the E450 has the same engine as the E53, but tuned differently to obtain the extra power. MB says to use the .71/72 in 0W-20 for the E450, but .51/52 in 0W-40 for the E53. I wonder why that is. Is it a mechanical need where there is something different in the engine that needs the different oil or maybe it's a use case need where the AMG will likely be driven harder and therefore need a different oil. Anyone know?

.
The difference in viscosity is most likely due to the E53 engine running hotter.

I feel that the .71 and .72 for the AMG is a mis-print, as further up in the manual it specifies .51. All operating fluid information restricts the E 53 to .51 and .52. There is an important caveat in the manual information above that states ... "observe possible viscosity restrictions of the approved SAE viscosity classes". For the E 53 - that viscosity restriction is noted as 0w or 5w-40. .71 and .72 are only 0w-20 viscosity. That puts me back to my post #54. I'm not sure it's possible for MB to make this more confusing.

100% agree, the whole manual wreaks of AI interpretation with little educated oversight.
