ProClip iPhone mount for W214 w/Superscreen

I don't find the cup holder wireless charging tray very convenient to use. Plus, there are almost always two phones in the car so one of them invariably ends up in one of the two cup holders. ProClip does not specifically offer a phone mount for the W214. However, ProClip's product for the EQS sedan and SUV (PN: 855814) appeared to be a possible fit. I decided to take a chance and ordered one. As supplied the 855814 phone mount will fit into the A/C vent slot above the center screen. However, I made a few modifications to the mount in order to improve the fit for my installation.

Nice! It would be great to see a picture with the phone in place from a bit of a distance to get an appreciation for how it looks from the drivers perspective. I know that may be difficult with the phone mounted, but you did say you have more than one phone.

Also, what did you wire the power to?

Looks very nice. Do you feel it obstructs your use of the center screen, in particular the upper left corner of it to do things like switch to car play? Also, how does it interfere with the vent as far as sending air where you want it?

I've seen a mount in the past that uses the driver display as a mount point. Did you ever look into that one and decide against it in favor of this mount?

Sorry for so many questions. I'm very curious as I may do something similar one day.

I used a MagSafe charger with a 2 meter cable and ran it to the USB C port in the cup holder compartment. There is a large gap in front of the cockpit screen. The dashboard trim can be pulled back slightly to allow the cable end to be slipped in front of the screen. From there are slid the cable over to the right sight edge of the cockpit screen. I enclosed a few inches of the white cable near the charger with some black 1/8" ID cable wrap. The cable then continues downwards alongside the steering column. Then I routed the cable from the steering column to the console. I managed to get a plastic snake from the dashboard area to the driver seat inside the console, but I was unable to pull the cable end through with the snake. So I gave up and mounted the cable on the outside of the console to a hole in the side of the console that is near the rear edge of the cup holder compartment. I wrapped the cable with the slit cable wrapp and secured it to the seam in the console using some modified cable wrap ties. I removed the cup holder and discovered it was fairly easy to get the cable into the console below the cup holders. There is a rubber rectangular tube that connects the cup holder compartment to the larger console compartment. I pushed this tube rearwards and brought the charger cable up through the rectangular hole. I then drilled a 1/8" hole in the rubber tube about 1/2" from the end and cut a slot in the tube so I could bring the cable up through the hole in the tube. With much difficulty, I got the tube back into place. I would figure out a different way to get the cable above the cup holder tray if I did this again. One possibility would be to cut a rectangular hole big enough for the USB C cable end into the rubber tube using an X-Acto knife. I re-installed the cup holder tray and plugged the cable into one of the USB C ports.

The Apple Car Play icon is still visible from the driver side view. One of the reasons I modified the top left corner of the ProClip bracket was to move the mount as far to the left as possible. Your concern could be an issue for a larger phone. For a larger phone I would consider mounting the ball off center towards the left.

I am not familiar with the mount that attaches to the cockpit screen.

The vent is somewhat blocked. And the ProClip mount does restrict the downward movement of the lever very slightly. I am not bothered by either of these issues.

Thanks. Good looking install.

The driver display mount seems to be getting popular as I see several options for that. Here is one I found on Amazon.

I might have considered using the base mount without the extra contraption. I think the phone would vibrate a lot if mounted as shown in the video. I would also try to move the ball from the left side.

Cantilevered dynamic loading on that screen is a bad idea IMO

After studying the installation instructions for the ProClip 855814 EQS phone mount at this link I realized that the leading edge of the mount was intended to be inserted into the trim gap about 1/2" from the edge of the dashboard.

https://docs.proclipusa.com/instructions/855814

In the W214 dash the gap is neither wide or deep enough to accommodate the ProClip 855814 phone mount. In my original installation described above, I hooked the 4mm high edge of the mount onto the inside edge of the vent opening which is an inch or so from the edge of the dash. This approach interfered slightly with the vent baffle and it also angled the mount forward to the point that the range of adjustment for the phone angle was not optimum.

I cut a small strip of aluminum about 50mm long by 13mm wide from a piece of floor edging. I started by making a slot into the trim piece that is about 37mm long by 2mm wide using a Dremel cut off wheel and a small file. Then I cut 9mm off the edge of the top portion of ProClip mount. I reshaped the edge of the mount to create a 1mm high "hook" that fit into the 2mm wide slot on the aluminum strip. I covered the area that I filed with a strip of matte black 3M wrap. If I had access to a small milling machine I could have done a better job and obviated the need for the wrap. A piece of 3M automotive double sided tape holds the aluminum strip in place. Basically, this slotted strip of aluminum mimics the trim gap on the EQS dashboard.

The ball I attached to the mount is positioned about 1" lower than in my first installation. The range of adjustment for the phone is much better and the ProClip mount no longer interferes with the vent baffle. I re-installed the 17mm ball with the 6mm aluminum spacer since the chrome plating started peeling off the pen tip spacer I used for the first install. I installed the mount with the aluminum strip in place rather than attempting to install the aluminum strip first. The aluminum strip is held in place with 3M tape. The actual ProClip mount relies only on a mechanical fit to hold it in place and can be easily removed if necessary.

After a few months the 3M tape I used to mount the slotted aluminum strip (see post #11 above) started to stretch. This is likely to get worse during the Winter when hot air is blowing through the dash vent. I decided to abandon the modified Proclip mount and try one of the available driver display phone mounts.
