Dashcam worth activating?

The front camera on my new 2025 E450 wagon can be activated as a dashcam for $200. The description on the MB website touts it as a way to document your scenic trips, but doesn’t say much more about what and how else it can be used, such as recording accidents or bad drivers. I’d like to hear from people who have the dashcam, how they use it, and how convenient it is to use while driving. I would like for it to serve a useful purpose beyond my cellphone camera, rather than just being a novelty item.

Thanks!

For $200 I would say it's worth it just so you have an integrated camera with no installation needed. It's forward facing only and will not record sound. I would be much happier if it recorded the rear view, but for that to happen, the rear camera cover would have to remain open. It works just like you would expect for a forward facing dash camera. You can record on a continuous loop on a USB thumb drive and you can take forward facing pictures using the touch screen or voice commands. Just say, hey Mercedes take a picture, and it will snap a pic.

I'm seriously considering a third party camera system so I can record from the rear and enable audio recording when I need it. The blackvue I had allowed a swipe gesture on the side of the camera to enable/disable audio recording. Useful if you get pulled over for example. I also want better resolution and parking mode with a separate battery. I'll continue to use the integrated camera as a backup/secondary system. I haven't pulled the trigger on one yet but doing some research on which one I want.

I purchased the Dashcam option for $160 or $180. If you wait about a month after you get the car you should receive a discount offer from Mercedes that'll give you 10% or 20% off the dashcam option. There's no sound, but make sure you buy the correct USB drive/memory card that was specifically designed to be constantly written over. I'm happy with it and it's better than nothing. It will definitely come in handy if there's an accident or a road rage incident with someone who is trying to brake-check you.

I think it records in 2-minute clips, so it makes it easier to find videos and you can watch or delete clips directly from the center screen. Once your memory card fills up it just automatically overwrites the oldest clip and it's activated every time you start the car.

Thanks all for the replies. I think I’ll give it a try. It’s not very expensive relative to the price of the car.

If I had a nit to pick about the MB, is that they have all these cameras and sensors, but didn’t think to integrate them into a system that gives 360 degree protection.
In the Tesla, you have multiple views of an accident. it also monitors your car while not in use, to identify anyone who vandalizes it.
It is very useful to show insurance companies and/or police to have those at fault in damage to the vehicle be responsible financially for restitution.
I have no idea why the engineers at MB didn’t put any thought into such an integrated system.

I agree the system is lacking, but the W214, and likely other MBs can do this. You just cannot view the cameras live. If the vehicle is hit while parked, it will take photos all around the car for review.

they do put thought into it but it’s expensive to do. These cars are essentially a series of bit and pieces that Mercedes bolts together. Getting things to talk to each other is complicated. Tesla started from scratch…..
