2025 AT winter tires

Finally got around to getting winter tires installed on my 2025 AT. I went with the Pirelli P Zero Winters. I've driven in the Northeast and New England for most of my adult life, so I'm used to winter driving. But this is the first time I bought winter tires for my car. What changed my mind was a ski trip last year when I had to drive through a blizzard to get to the mountain. I had two thoughts going through my mind -- one, is an epic powder day for the Northeast worth the safety of my family and two, I'm definitely getting winter tires before the next ski season. I ended up turning around and driving back to the hotel and never made it to the mountain. This year, I'll be ready for anything.

I bought the tires from my local MB dealer and paid $355/tire. Total cost with installation and balancing came out to $2161. Initial reaction to the tires is that they are smoother on the road than the all season, run flat Bridgestones that came with the car. Winter tire technology has evolved since the heavy snow tires my father used back in the day. The Pirellis also have a higher speed rating than the Bridgestones (V for the Pirellis and H for the Bridgestones). I'll have to remember that if I ever track the AT (just kidding). I also bought a Slime tire repair kit. My AT came with the MB tire repair kit, but Slime makes an easy kit that only requires the press of one button to inject the slime and inflate the wheel. I liked the kit so much I also bought one for my son's car.

Looking forward to the first snow storm of the year to put the tires to a real test. Also hoping Santa gets me a tire rack to store my off season tires.

At my previous house I mounted the tire rack six feet off the ground so as not to waste any "floor" space. Then I discovered I was not strong enough to get the wheels and tires into the rack. In my current garage, I mounted the same rack two feet off the ground.

Thanks, good tip!

We had less snow than originally forecasted in the NYC area, but I had no problems getting in and out of an unplowed driveway with about 5 inches of snow. Honestly, the winter tires are more about peace of mind. I did some reading on winter tires before the purchase, and the softer compound in the tire helps with grip and stopping distance in below freezing temps with or without snow. I have the 19 inch wheels on my AT and my winter tires are 255/45/19.

Took the AT skiing in VT over the holidays. I took this pic walking back to the car after the last chair. We got a couple of inches of snow every day and temps ranged from -10 to 10 degrees, which was great for skiing and testing out the winter tires. You can tell who are the local Vermonters not just by the license plate but by how confidently they drive in snowy conditions. I was more careful driving than the locals but always felt under control with the winter tires, My highway mileage was also nearly the same as with the all season tires. I found 2 negatives during the trip -- the smaller gas tank makes a difference on a long road trip. Also didn't notice all the plastic parts on the wheels until seeing them covered in road salt. I wish MB would bring back 19 inch AMG wheels for the AT.

Happy to report the winter tires work well in mud as well. We had a great ski season this year but Spring is coming.

One last pic to close out this thread. Switched back to the all seasons tires last weekend. I ended up driving almost 5,000 miles on the winter tires. The winter tires handled well in all conditions (snow, rain, dry) in the city and on the highways. I picked a good winter to buy winter tires. But even without the record snowfall, I would recommend winter tires to anyone living in an area with snow.
