Chipped Center Console - What Should I Do?

Hi Everyone,

Saw today that I have a minor chip on my center console where the wood is. See attached. I called my service advisor who I'm close with, and he said it's probably ok to fill it in with a sharpie, and then some clear nail polish? I'm definitely not going to replace it lol. This was either done by me or the car wash people. You try to take care of your car, but again, who knows. lol.

What do you all think?

I had almost the same chip in the same place on my E53 center console. My wife noticed it soon after it happened and I carefully emptied the contents of the compartment and found the chip. I glued it back in place with some super glue. It's not perfect, but it looks better than leaving alone. If you can't find the chip, the sharpie idea is probably a good option. I don't think I would use any nail polish since the console does not have a glossy finish.

Rub a little dirt on it and forget about it.

You could try a furniture texture kit which contains wag crayons, I use it on kitchen cabinets, it’s easy to apply and can fill small chips. at forget about it and enjoy your car.

What do you mean? I use plastic or vinyl repair kits on wood all the time.

Interesting find. I ordered the console trim piece and will report back in a month or so when I receive it.

Provided it fits well and the color is close to other trim in the interior. The price is low enough to order it and hope for the best.

Lol, I got the same exact wood and issue on mine, maybe even 3-4 spots. 1 after getting it back from service. While it doesn't really bother me, I am really interested in seeing if that console trim piece works out for you. Keep us posted.

I have the same issue on the passenger side of my console. (I have the natural grain walnut). Minwax makes stain pens that you can purchase that work like a sharpie but dispense wood stain. I go over the chip, let it sit for a few minutes and wipe off any excess. Good as new. I agree with the other poster not to use nail polish etc. given that your center console doesn’t have a gloss finish.

The "front only" version is sold out, but you can still order the "front/rear" kit for about $16. Not sure which version of the interior can use the rear trim piece. My E53 does not have a hatch at the rear of the console.

For anyone looking, Ebay is also an option:

Received the trim piece a few days ago. It arrived broken in a padded envelope. Not really adequately packaged for a trip halfway around the World. Initially the seller offered to discount the broken piece by 30% then 50%, before finally agreeing to a refund the purchase price after seeing a photo. It was not necessary to return the broken part to get the refund.

The silver color match with the trim on the outer edge of the console was not perfect, but it was acceptable. This trim piece does fit in the space between the sliding door and the console body. HOWEVER, with the trim piece in place the sliding door cannot be opened. In other words, the design is a total failure, since using it would require keeping the hatch always open or always closed.

ha! Has EXACT same thing happen. Vendor offered 30% and asked if I could take for local repair lol. I refused and got 100% refund. It’s in the trash now.

Even if it were not broken. I would be concerned with the glue on the double sided tape staining or otherwise damaging the wood if I ever decided to take it off. Clearly a cheaply made product. No telling what other corners were cut to manufacturer these for pennies to make a profit. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

Yeah I think it looks kinda tacky (imo) and would ruin the lines of the console. I personally would rather live with the chip.
