V8 Thermostat 170 Degree- Add 30HP + timing
It only takes two bolts on the engine top and you do not loose much coolent to install.
A way to add 30HP to you car:
- go to a repair shop that has a MB tool. They can set your ECU 91 Octane gas. This will up the timing several degrees. It cost me $60.00
- add this thermostat and the car will run cooler. When the engine runs cooler, the ECU will add some more timing and lean out the fuel just a little.
I have a pic if you want to see, all clean and a new part. The guy that once made and sold these may not do it any more. I never figured out how he machined or changed out the metal sensor inside the case.
$120.00 + ship.
But is a good price for this application

On the 30HP thing, this was a note from Dealer at 'crank HP', not wheeel HP adder.
All the 4.3 and 5.4 CLKs have the factory ECU set to 87 Octane gas. A dealer or local shop with reader "forgot name of unit' can set ECU to 91 Octane, as well as have Fan turn to high any time AC is on. The change to 91 up's the timing and AF a lot per dealer and I do notice the diff. (I run 91-93 Octane anyway).
The Thermo is a completly diff set of AF anf timing tables within the ECU map. When the temp is between 195 (stock) to 160 (cold), the ECU has several timing and AF tables it selects from. The colder the engine, the more aggressive the timing.
I have tuned may hot-rods with Superchargers over the years. The MB has some of the best anti-knock sensor setups I have seen. Not that is means much to this thread. The point is that the MB ECU will dynamically adjust timing the AF if if feels knock at the min.
