Charging rate at 9.7 KW

My AMG EQU SUV is always charging at 9.7KW. This is reported by the car and my Wallbox charger. Not a big increase over the specification of 9.6KW, but every bit helps. Can the charge rate be increased to 11.5KW? My level 2 charger is capable of 48 amps.

The 9.7kW happens when your voltage is a bit higher, say 242-243V on L1/L2. While frequency is very tightly regulated on the grid, you will often see voltage sag or rise above the nominal 120/240 voltage point. Especially if loads in your neighborhood or distribution point are low or high. Sometimes you'll see 9.5 kW as well. Thus, you're still limited to 40 amps, but your grid voltage has gone a bit higher than 240V, so your EVSE will pass that along to the onboard charger, which will then send it to the battery just a little faster.

No, the rate is set by MB in the vehicle. I think they set it at 9.6kw to help preserve the life of the battery. It reduces the heat created during charging, a little bit, which will help to keep the HV battery heathy longer.

I just checked the input voltage. It's reading 244V! So that explains what is happening. Is there any way to have the car request more amperage? Porsche can accept 11.5 KW. Thanks

I think that the limit is set by the AC -> DC convertor. The DC input can be as high as 170KW from a Level 3 charger.

There is not. The car is limited to 40 amps on AC. You'd have to get the grid voltage considerably higher, which of course would burn out components or at least trigger an emergency disconnect. 11kW vehicles use 3-phase power, or higher amperage single phase power.

Yes for DC it is limited to 170KW but for AC it is limited to 40 Amps and about a 9.6 KW charge rate.

2024 AMG EQE SUV, 2022 Audi e-tron GT Performance
1) Many EVs in the US support 11.5kW L2 charging (240V * 48A), including two e-trons I’ve owned (SUV and GT); only the Nissan Leaf and the Fisker Ocean (off the top of my head) were notorious for aiming low at 32A (7.6kW)
2) the 40A cap on the MB’s onboard charging equipment is purely a cost-saving move, plain and simple (see 3. below for MB’s reason for not supporting two different onboard chargers globally)
3) the US (residential) uses split-phase 240V while Europe has available 3-phase that supplies 240V/400V (usually between 32A and 50A, 48A being quite common); certain European Audi models support 19.2-22kW charging
