OTA Updates Observation

So I sold my Tesla to get the EQS SUV. Very happy with that decision but for the life of me I cannot figure out why MB can't get their tech to work correctly! It's the opposite problem of Tesla. MB builds an amazing well made car but the MBUX system is full of glitches. Tesla cannot build a luxury car but their tech is unsurpassed. This is a puzzling situation. With my Tesla it was so simple to sign the car into my home wifi and then Tesla would push updates at fiber optic speeds at night. (I have 1 Gbps internet) I would wake up many mornings to a message, "your software has been updated" with a list of things updated. But I am told my EQS can only get OTA updates while you are driving the car. I have not received any yet so I am going by what others have experienced. If this is true and if they use the T Mobile network I am in trouble because I don't drive for long periods of time to get an update and T Mobile is the worst possible carrier here in Orlando. I may never get an OTA update! Perhaps MB could hire some Tesla folks to help them with the tech issues. Bottom line is something must change if MB wants to be competitive in EV. Disgruntled customers do not return to buy again.

Don’t expect to see many update. My 450 was purchased in March and I received the first OTA update a few weeks ago. T-Mobile service is excellent here.

This really touches on a bigger aspect of EVs. EVs for the most part are soulless, uninvolved transportation appliances, so what do you do to keep it interesting? Tesla's answer to that question is apparently a fart app etc., and keep adding other semi-useful stuff via constant updates as well as aiming for full self-driving, so the occupants can watch Netflix instead, because driving these cars is not very interesting anymore.

I drove manual transmissions for almost 20 years, so I didn't need a bunch of gizmos in the car to keep me entertained. Even now, I drive an ICE that offers an awesome driving experience, so 95% of the time I don't even interact with the tech. The OTA update phenomena has lead to lazy developers releasing products that are not quite ready, because they can fix it with updates later. I don't think that's something to aspire to. Yes, MBUX is one of those systems that was released half baked, and so really requires some fixes.

Speaking of my personal experience with my C63, it doesn't have MBUX. It has the latest COMAND system which offers many of the same features and even uses the same online platform and supports OTA updates, but it is very mature. The only OTA updates I've received and really needed are map updates and a recall fix for the eCall system. I did recently complain about intermittent black screens when I start the car and they updated the software while it was in for service. So there was an update, but for some reason MB decided not to proactively push it out to every car. It wasn't something that bothered me much as it happened rarely and really didn't make a difference that it required a dealer visit to get the update since it was done during regular service. As said, I have my car to drive and not to play video games or watch movies in it.

It all depends on what you are after. Some people seem to want a smartphone on wheels and receive new features periodically to keep the product interesting. I don't need that, because I drive an AMG which is by definition interesting. It doesn't have to be an ICE, either. I recently attended an AMG winter driving event in Austria and one of the cars we drove was the EQE 53. That car also kept my attention and interest with how it drove, and not with all the software gizmos and touchscreens. I couldn't care less if it was able to drive itself, because I like to drive. Level 2 automation to take over some of the workload on long drives or in traffic is fine, but if I didn't wanna drive I'd take the train.

We love our "soulless, uninvolved transportation appliance"

The same my wife's Volvo XC40 Pure Electric Recharge. OTA updates are only downloaded while driving.

IMO the cellular function must be turned on to receive data.

Superswiss...I am the other side of the coin. I love tech. The more the better. However, I don't use the tech at all for hands on spirited driving experiences. When I am on a boring 200 mile trip, I use all of it! I want to get to the point that I can take a nap and trust the car to get me to my destination or at least very close to it. Full automation us my dream. I am very interested in the EQE 53 you spoke about. I had a 2007 E63 and loved that car.

EQS
one is a tech company that makes cars
one is a car company that incorporates tech

I prefer the car company.... The fit, finish and styling is what I expect for a vehicle over $100k, not pleather and an iPad in the middle

I agree with you, but with the recent price reductions of the Tesla model 3 and model Y, both are attractive options for buyers on a limited budget who want an EV. The model X is just over priced and doesn’t really compete with an EQS SUV for the same reason you and I would rather buy from a car company.
