580 tire replacement recommendations

My one year old 580 suv has 14K miles and the tire threads are already < 4/32 and need to be replaced ! I have third row with staggered 285 rear and 275 fronts. Is there anyone here with staggered third row set up who has updated to 275 for all four tires (so it can be rotated for longer life) ?

I bought four new all season tires through my MB dealer. $2,200 installed with an alignment which is tricky for this vehicle due to the rear-steering. The tires that came on the car were the performance type and they were not good in rain and didn't last very long (replaced at 6K miles, right-rear showing cords).

The new all season tires are much better suited to this EV.

I don't think the staggered wheels can be rotated as they are different widths and offsets front to rear.

I got these specs from Tire Rack - These are for replacement wheels so the ET may be a little off as the fronts are listed in the DOG as ET +30.1 The 2023 and 2024 DOGs have no info on the staggered wheel specs and are listed as TBA.

Front : 21x 9.5 ET +31
Rear : 21 x 10.5 ET +43

You could also try going to 285 all around. Could use the 21" Michelin Latitude Cross tire that comes on the G63 21" wheel. Only available in 285/45/21. I might try that once the stock tires needs replacing on our 580 staggered.

Out of curiosity I compared the position of the front/rear wheels using the 285/45 R21 tires. The outer edge of the tires is almost in the same position for both wheels. The only down side I see is that this tire size is fairly expensive. However I did note that TireRack has some new old stock from 2020 available at a bargain price.

Our EQS 580 SUV has the 3rd row seating which required staggered wheels & tires which, and as was mentioned above, cannot be rotated. Knowing this now, I would not opt for the 3rd row seats if we were to buy another EQS in the future. We never fold it up and it's only been used once in over a year. And not being able to rotate has wore out the tires very quickly.

While EQS SUVs with the third row are equipped with staggered wheels, I don't believe that the wider rear tires are actually required. The 285/45-R21 rear tires typically have a 113 capacity rating compared to the 110 rating of the 275/45-R21 front tires. The 265/50-R20 tires I downsized to are rated at 111. The capacity in pounds for these service ratings are:

110 = 2337 lbs
111= 2403 lbs
113 = 2535 lbs

My assumption is that MB equipped the EQS SUVs with third road seating with higher capacity 285/45-R21 tires to accommodate an additional 400 lbs of passengers in the third row. Apparently they overlooked the fact that the third row only works for lightweight passengers. It's interesting to note that the GVWR of the EQS SUV is 7440 lbs for all trim levels whether or not they are equipped with the third row.

This leads me to conclude that the wider rear 10" wheels on EQS SUVs with third row seating can be changed to the 9.5" wheels used on the front in order to mount 275/45-R21 tires on all four wheels.

I decided to stay with the staggered configuration this time but replaced the OE scorpion zeros with scorpion verde - hopefully these will last longer than 15k ! Ordered them from tire rack yesterday for just under 1400$ installed. Do you think 2020 build is safe to go with ?

ps. - I also plan to get alignment done by MB for $200.

You should cross shop all the dealers around you for tires too:

https://www.mbusatirecenter.com

Each dealer sets their own prices so check all of the ones you're willing to drive to.

This site only shows the OE tires for 580 staggered option , which I do not want at the moment.

You can find details (Width, Diameter, ET) for the staggered wheels at this Alloy Wheels Direct website. Here's an example:

My understanding is that tires are safe to use for 6 years. They should be replaced at that age regardless of tread depth. However, I suspect tires that have been stored for a few years before being used could probably be safe even beyond six years. I would have no problem ordering the three-year old 2020 tires from TireRack since they would be worn out by 2026.

Our EQS450 has third row with staggered 285 rear and 275 fronts. In January, we purchased 4 MB original 275 winter rims and 275 Scorpion Winters for all four tires. Just put them back on a few weeks ago and have been very satisfied.

Which rims did you choose for the Winter tires?

This is the rim we went with. I prefer the look of the original rims, but these work great for the winter.

Update : After having lived with the scorpion verde for few weeks , I can say with confidence that these are superior in terms of comfort , noise level and traction compared to the OEM scorpion zero. Can’t speak for tread wear for now , but the zero was terrible and had to replaced at 15k. Hopefully I can get more than that with the verde !
