Rear brakes and crazy prices and part availability
They also said I need new tires, new rear brakes and 20k mile service. They quoted $6800 for this work!
I have worked on cars for years and have no problem doing the service and brakes... but it is virtually impossible to find parts. Everything is listed as discontinued.
My question is... is it normal to need new rear brakes (pads and rotors) at 20k miles? I would say I drive in a 'spirited' manner but more acceleration and less about braking.. I use strong regen 100% of the time. I am surprised they say it needs rotors as well. Rotors at 20k miles seems excessive, especially since they wanted $2k to replace JUST the rear brakes.
$1800 of the bill was the service which I will do myself... it seems like $200 worth of filters and quoting a whole day to do the replacement? Again, crazy!
Tires are also very hard to find. Tire Rack has the fronts for $550/ea (Pirelli Scorpion Elect) in 275/45-21. Rears are 285/45-21 and I can't find anything that is electric vehicle/run flat. Even tire rack is suggesting the non-run flat non-EV specific Pirelli Scorpions for the rear. I am in New England and need something that will work in snow.. but the car is a lease with just under 1.5 years left so I'm hesitant to splurge on expensive tires for the next guy.
I really love this car but it seems like it would be a huge problem to own it post-lease. Pity, I love it and wish I could own it long term (or get another when this lease is up).

This at a large franchised MB dealer near me. I was surprised they wanted almost $7k worth of maintenance on a 20k mile car which vastly exceeded the cost of the warranty work MB will be paying for. I felt a bit "bent over" (or at least an attempt).

i looked for other pads as it’s usually one of the first things I do, go to a low dust ceramic formula. But nothing seems available for our cars. And yeah I can’t believe how fast these cars eat through brakes. My friends 7 year old Model X with 350k miles pads still look great. Regardless what my service dept states about the brake noise, this car doesn’t use the regen as good as other EVs. He states it squeaks because the pads are never used, but I have a 450+, regen can only happen on the rear axle and my brakes squeak all the time even on max regen unless I really let off slowly. Anyways hope the link helps. I for sure would do my own brakes too and I’d personally pass on the rotors with a year and a half left on your lease.
