Rear brakes and crazy prices and part availability

I brought my '23 EQS 580 SUV to the dealer for a front end rattle - sway bar (or some part of it) needs replaced... 2-3 week wait for parts. Also trunk was randomly unlocking - 2-3 week wait for parts.

They also said I need new tires, new rear brakes and 20k mile service. They quoted $6800 for this work!

I have worked on cars for years and have no problem doing the service and brakes... but it is virtually impossible to find parts. Everything is listed as discontinued.

My question is... is it normal to need new rear brakes (pads and rotors) at 20k miles? I would say I drive in a 'spirited' manner but more acceleration and less about braking.. I use strong regen 100% of the time. I am surprised they say it needs rotors as well. Rotors at 20k miles seems excessive, especially since they wanted $2k to replace JUST the rear brakes.

$1800 of the bill was the service which I will do myself... it seems like $200 worth of filters and quoting a whole day to do the replacement? Again, crazy!

Tires are also very hard to find. Tire Rack has the fronts for $550/ea (Pirelli Scorpion Elect) in 275/45-21. Rears are 285/45-21 and I can't find anything that is electric vehicle/run flat. Even tire rack is suggesting the non-run flat non-EV specific Pirelli Scorpions for the rear. I am in New England and need something that will work in snow.. but the car is a lease with just under 1.5 years left so I'm hesitant to splurge on expensive tires for the next guy.

I really love this car but it seems like it would be a huge problem to own it post-lease. Pity, I love it and wish I could own it long term (or get another when this lease is up).

The EQS is too new to have a robust aftermarket part supply available. It will come with time. I've noticed the discontinued thing for EQS parts as well, but I also see the same thing looking for other brand parts for family member's other make cars. Not sure if it is supply problems, just changing part numbers, or who knows. About the brakes and rotors...this is very difficult to believe. I would ask to see both parts with your own eyes and have them explain why they need replacing. If you drive in high regen--no way you need new brakes and rotors. If the rotors don't warp over time, and EQS might never need new brake parts in its entire life cycle. The egregious charges suggest they are looking to extract cash vs. doing the right thing. The pads on all three of our EQ cars look like new, including my wife's with 42,000 miles.

They said I was at 4mm pad thickness on the rears which is the minimum. I have done dozens of brake jobs in my life and I will do this one too - no way am I paying $2k for just rear brakes. Pads I get, rotors is very hard to believe!

This at a large franchised MB dealer near me. I was surprised they wanted almost $7k worth of maintenance on a 20k mile car which vastly exceeded the cost of the warranty work MB will be paying for. I felt a bit "bent over" (or at least an attempt).

23 EQS 450+ SUV
Got this from one of the FB pages I’m a part of, guy claimed it fit his 580. They aren’t cheap, but cheaper than the dealer. Fronts are like 750$

https://www.ebay.com/itm/205587063374

i looked for other pads as it’s usually one of the first things I do, go to a low dust ceramic formula. But nothing seems available for our cars. And yeah I can’t believe how fast these cars eat through brakes. My friends 7 year old Model X with 350k miles pads still look great. Regardless what my service dept states about the brake noise, this car doesn’t use the regen as good as other EVs. He states it squeaks because the pads are never used, but I have a 450+, regen can only happen on the rear axle and my brakes squeak all the time even on max regen unless I really let off slowly. Anyways hope the link helps. I for sure would do my own brakes too and I’d personally pass on the rotors with a year and a half left on your lease.

They'll tell you the manufacturer requires pads and rotors at the same time (and that's probably the actual guidance in their maintenance instructions). Or they tell you the manufacturer recommends it, or it's a safety item. It's BS, but lawyers and money are involved, so the manufacturer and the dealer are going to take the most certain route to ensure your safety. Sensors on the pads are great for telling the owner/operator when the brake pads are too thin. They don't typically use such a sensor for the rotors, so we get stuck with being pushed into pads and rotors at the same time.

Rear brake pads on EQS wear faster because of use with lane centering and steering assist. Multiple documented cases here, including mine, where Mercedes likes to recommend brake replacement well before end of useful life. For example, the rear brake pads new are 8mm so at 4mm they are approximately 50% used. I'm at 60K on the original brakes.

Rear brakes wearing faster than fronts isn’t unique to EQ cars, I’ve had the same problem with Volvos, Audis and other Mercs. Some with standard and others with adaptive cruise control.

I'd be cautious about accepting the dealers measurements. When they measured my tires, they rounded 3.9 down to 3.0. If you can, make the measurements yourself so you know where you really stand.
