Actual Mileage

I’ve been driving about 30 miles per day lately and using 20% of the batteries.
I charge back up to 100% each night.
I was wondering what other people are experiencing.

First, is this a real post, or are you trolling...... hard to believe 30 miles uses 20% of the EQS battery capability? Second, you might consider reading the charging recommendations in the owner's manual. Most believe that you should not charge on a regular basis past 80%, and charging every day may not be the best idea. Want to tell us the real story?

I’ll just ignore the trolling comment and real story.
Do you even have an EQS580 to respond or just wish you did?
Sorry, the mileage was 36 miles not 30 miles for 20%.
See picture for stats.

You're right, I don't have a 580. I have a 450+, and 50 miles equates to about 11% battery on my car. Sorry if I offended you, the initial numbers just didn't seem to make sense. I charge every 4th or 5th day, when my reading is about 20%, and charge to 80% unless I am planning a trip (where I will charge to 100%). I charge at 7.7kW on a ChargePoint Home Flex charger. I seriously recommend you read the charging recommendations in the owner's manual, as most feel charging repeatedly to 100% shortens the life of the battery. I also use the ECO program when charging, again to theoretically lengthen battery life. In cold temps (30 degrees) the battery definitely drains more quickly, and in warmer temps I get much better mileage. At 80%, with temps around 60-70 degrees, my car is predicting 350 miles of range, and I find that to be right on. Less so in cold, and I will have to wait and see how the Summer heat impacts range. Hope this helps.

100% agree with hlothery. Pretty much all EV manufacturers recommend that you don’t charge to 100% as you’ll reduce battery capacity over time. For daily usage, 80% is the sweet spot (although I charged my Teslas to 90% and that worked well). Only charge to 100% when you are going on a road trip and try to time it such that you start driving within a couple of hours of the battery reaching 100%.

I would be very interested to see if the mileage differences we are experiencing have to do with the temperature differences between CT and South TX, and/or the differences between the two motor 580 and the single motor 450+, or both? I did see the 80% prediction on my car drop to about 270 miles on rare days here in San Antonio where the temps stayed in the high 30's, low 40's.

My usual trip is 30 miles round trip and results in 10% loss of SOC after 2 weeks of experience and it charges easily overnight so that I stay at 80% charge for the week.

In addition to the 80% recommendation, I have read that short/small charges are not good for the battery either. I am trying to work down to about 50-60% before charging back to 80.
I have found and I think others have confirmed that in cold weather the instant heat uses a noticeable amount of capacity. Once the car is warm consumption seems normal.

You are averaging 2.0mpkwh which would imply a range of 216 miles. I am averaging 2.4 mpkwh which would imply a range of 259 miles. My average is suppressed a bit by the fact that my dealer did 23 miles on it in Wisconsin temperatures, and also by the fact that I spend a lot of time sitting in my car on the driveway running the heating and not driving (my toddler loves to hang out in the car and play with the controls). I expect we will be over 3 by the time things warm up and I start using the car normally. My recent trips have been over 3.0.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate all the comments.
I’ll take the advice and wait until battery is low and limit the charge to 80% and not charge up every night.

That is a very reasonable expectation. Since picking up my car and putting on 1200 miles, my average mileage in SoCal has been 3.1mpkWh

According to the trip data on my app, on my drive home from the golf course yesterday of 22.6 miles I averaged 4.5mpkWh. Temp here, according to the car, was 75 degrees. I averaged 40 mph in traffic, using the strong recuperation mode for about half the time. It predicted my max range as 473 miles. I realize that this is not typical of highway driving, but it is a testament of what onepedal driving can accomplish in city driving.

That's awesome. Did you need to use the AC at all?

AC was on the whole time. I was at 75 MPH for a short stretch of Interstqte 10, then into strong recuperation on 1604 (the busiest road in North San Antonio), where traffic was going 15-70MPH, depending on conditions. That was the last 12 miles of my trip. This car is fantastic when temps are warm.

That is good to hear. I’m waiting on my 580 but was concern about high temps here in southeast Florida and driving all the time with AC on. It was 88 today. Good to know it doesn’t sound like it will affect mileage that much.

Hot conditions will also affect mileage but much less than deep cold. Cold can mean a 40% hit, hot 20%. Expect about 300 miles with constant AC. If you keep the AC at 72 or 74, loses might be significanly less. Same thing in winter, if you keep the heat at 68 or 66, you lower the losses considerably. I"ve never understood the urge to use the heat or AC at max as many people do.

I usually set it to 77 in the summer because the AC in my S 450 has real strong air conditioning. I hate cold. I’m trying to talk my wife into renting a condo in AZ or FL for a couple months in winter.

I hate cold as well. Retired a few years back and bought a house in southeast Florida. I still summer in New England because of the heat and humidity of the Florida summer. Buying the 580 from my New England dealer because no ADM, as opposed to palm beach Mercedes which adds a sizable ADM.

So, today, drove home from the golf course, again. Ambient temp 57 degrees (which is cold as hell IMHO), Saturday traffic not as bad. Same trip, stats per my app: 22.7 miles, 28 minutes, average speed 47 mph, 4.3 mpkWh. Still had AC on, set to 68 degrees, to dry the cabin air (my AC is ALWAYS on). Still used strong recuperation and one pedal driving when traffic was bad, though not as much today. This car is phenominal.

Last night I charged to 100%. Today my wife and I drove into the Hill Country to look at Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush, wildflowers are a thing in Texas this time of year. We drove 3hrs and 55 minutes, a total of 183 miles, much of that at 72mph on Highway 281. Ambient temperature was 76 degrees. The AC was going the whole time. We averaged 51mph, and 3.7mpkWh. We had 53% of the battery, approximately 220 miles, left when we returned home. The EQS is a truly amazing car!

My 580 has been at the VPC for 9 days. It should be any day now until it's placed on a truck. I hope I don't get spoiled with the tremendous range now through at least early October when the temperatures will be warm here in Des Moines. It's obvious that this car loves temperatures in the 70's or higher for the best range.

You are correct, why would you charge every night, step back, would you stop at a gas station every day to fill your ICE up, unless you have a three hundred mile round trip daily I don't think so.

Charging every night is a bad idea, run the battery down to 10 or 20% then charge. Here is a note from google about range and weather:
According to AAA's “Cold Weather Can Cut Electric Car Range by Over 40%”, EVs often lose 12% of their range in cold weather, but the loss leaps to 41% with the heater on full blast.

OMG BAD advice! You will want to keep your battery between 20-80% and only go below or above when necessary.
