Why the center hump in rear floor?

I know this is a trivial question, just wondering if anyone knows the reason for the small hump in the rear floor area? I've just gotten used to the the completely flat rear floor in our Teslas.

Probably a wiring tunnel but agree it's bad design. The SUV doesn't have it.

It is a cable conduit
Not bad design at all the SUV is a taller vehicle thus its able to hide it under a higher floor.

+1...Agreed. The challenge with EVs having the battery in the floor is that the passengers naturally sit higher, so any way to make the floor thinner where the passengers sit is a plus. The Taycan has so called foot garages, where the floor is thinner by the feet of the rear passengers so the seats can be lower w/o compromising the seating position.

I'm sure if they put more effort in they could have found a better path for the cable conduit. Same for the lack of a frunk.

The road to mediocrity is lined by people who are not demanding and people who settle for good enough.

When you watch the interview with the CEO of Lucid, it is very clear why there is no hump. He would not put up with that. Design is an area where you can be absolutist. Design perfection is more attainable than technological perfection. While I love my EQS, I do believe Mercedes' design team let them down in several aspects of the EQS. The entire design team needs to immerse themselves in the meaning of "The best or nothing".

The EQS does not have a hump in the rear, its two cut outs in the floor for the occupants.
Its not that the EQS has a hump and the other don't, It's that the EQS has a lower floor for the occupants and the others don't!
If the EQS had a poor design like the Lucid and Tesla then you would be sitting with your knees higher.

Such as windshield fluid refill port, couldn't they have found another way? Like possibly a filler nozzle in the driver's door jamb? Silly.

it is a wiring tunnel and its not a bad design at all. Its and effort to lower the rear foot well as much as possible. Most EV sedan rear seats are pretty uncomfortable since the rear cusion has to be thin to accomodate the battery pack. The EQS is one of the few where that is not true. The rear seat is a little upright ĺin the non powered version) but your knees are in a natural seating position. Thus, that minuscule hump has a reason.. The SUV doesn't have it, of course, since it has about 4 additional vertical inches inside to work with, so no carve outs were necessary. The SUV does pay for it.....in shorter range.

Because the one they decided on is terrible. Anything would have been more aesthetically pleasing. /s

Being able to be cocksure of something about which one is most likely completely ignorant can be, I suppose, a blessing.

Then, again, perhaps not. 🧐

But who wants to own one of today's BMWs?

I quit after my '81 633 rusted out.

That is the super special BMW funnel at only $129.99 at your local BMW dealership or $2.49 at your local TSC or auto parts store.

Okay, you got me. I had to go back and watch the video to see what you were talking about. I have to admit that is a cool way of filling the washer fluid vs the latch on the side of the EQS. I’ve only had my car 2 days and several people have asked what that compartment is for. I’m still looking for the secret latch that opens the front hood. They hid it well.

There is a plastic cover with one screw where all mb latches are. Remove the screw and cover and, it's right there. Mine had the crew missing so all I had to do is pry the cover off. NOTE the hood has no struts. Also, when you close it, give it a goog 1 foot drop to ensure both sides of the hood latch. It's easy to not notice if one of them is not fully engaged.Until you notice that the seam on the side is not seall aligned of course...... There really isn't anything to see, but its good to know where the 12 V batter jumping posts are (near the left hinge). If your 12V battery is discharged your car wont start without at boost. Also its the easiest way to get leaves out from behind the wipers if you can't blow them out with your leaf blower.
