Most Needed Software Upgrade for Dual-Motor 580 models.....

Porsche has already done this for Taycans. We need Mercedes-Benz to provide the same for dual-motor EQS models like the 580....

Powertrain and thermal management improvements

New powertrain management software allows for more liberal disengagement of the front motor in the Taycan's Normal and Range drive modes, which helps to reduce parasitic drag while cruising. Porsche tells us that it expects this tweak to contribute to an approximately 50-kilometer boost (about 31 miles) to the European WLTP range estimate for dual-motor configurations. The automaker does not yet have an estimate as to how this will translate to our EPA numbers here in the US.

I do not know if this screen can be opened on the Sedan but on my 580 SUV there is a live screen that shows which motors are being used. On regular acceleration the front motor is used from 0-60 and at 60 mph and above only the rear motor is used. Under quick acceleration both front and rear motors are in use.

That has nothing to do with what OP is asking for.
That screen just shows how energy is being distributed. When it shows no energy being distributed to the front wheels, they are not disengaged and thus they are producing some parasitic drag.

What OP is asking for has already been done. It is not a “software update” because the motors are not capable doing such a thing. This will be standard for all EQ’s across the board for all 2024 models.

The better question is why wasn’t it done from the beginning? Lack of Disengagement and Heat pumps are two of the biggest engineering fails by MB… but we have the ugly “one bow design” and a windshield washer fluid port!

The EQE SUV which is being released in the next few months will be the first EVA2 model to have a disconnect unit for the front motor. There's a recent YouTube video out there with a Mercedes rep saying it's good for a 5% increase in range. It's expected that the rest of the EVA2 models will get it with the 2024 model year but I don't think that's confirmed yet.

In the sedan during steady state situations the car runs FWD. The rears only pop in during acceleration. If you use no regen there is no drag from the non driving motor.

Thank you for the clarification on my original post, however I maintain the question as to whether this can be addressed via software because that is exactly what Porsche did with the Taycan. The dual motor cars were originally continuously fully-engaged until Porsche issued a software revision that disengaged the 2nd motor and eliminated the parasitic drag. I'm questioning why Mercedes cannot do the same thing.

I've put approximately 1,000 miles on a 450+ loaner (1 long road trip) and over 6,500 miles on my 580. It is immediately evident in the 450+ that the car has significantly more range than the 580. Most likely culprit to me at least is the parasitic drag of 2 motors vs 1 with the same size battery pack in both cars.

And also the weight of the extra motor.

Just looked up online and EQS 580 = 5,822 lbs vs EQS 450+ = 5,468 lbs which is interesting bc the extra motor itself is likely ~150 lbs so not sure what the rest of the 350 lb weight difference is comprised of? Additional standard equipment perhaps?

With all the mounting, extra wiring harness, drive shafts/joints, certainly look more than 150lbs to me
