2022 EQS 450+ full charge range varies?

Hi! New to the forum here. I just got a 2022 EQS 450+ with 10k miles on it and I absolutely love it. I just took it on my first road trip and here’s my question:

before I left I charged at a Tesla supercharger (with the adapter) and my range at 100% battery was 422 miles. When I got to my destination (Vegas) I kept the car charging at one of the chargers at the hotel parking. However at 100% I only have 375 miles. Any ideas anyone? Thanks!

Range is only an estimate based on past experience, ambient conditions, driving style, etc. The new range estimate, most likely, reflects the highway drive vs local commute and your driving style on the highway.

Why is it that the varying estimated range does not appear to be any issue for ICE cars?

It is an issue for ICE cars as well. If you drive like a maniac there will be a decrease in range. Wind direction and velocity is a big factor. Additionally, very cold weather weather will decrease the range in ICE cars.

It (the difficulty of estimating an accurate range) is an issue for all cars, but especially so for EVs, as they're so energy efficient. As almost all of the battery's energy goes to moving the car, any slight change (e.g., wind resistance, elevation change) can lead to a big change in range.

OTOH, for ICE vehicles, most of the energy (from gasoline) is wasted as heat from the engine, so these changes have less effect on range.

Yes, I recall a Consumer Report article from years ago...a Toyota Camry driving at 85mph is getting like 20 miles per gallon. For the OP, take a look at some of the other threads...lots has been written about range. After you have the vehicle for a while, you'll begin to understand/anticipate what the range will be in different conditions.

Before I sold mine, my 22 450+ would get significantly better m/kWh coming home from the golf course than going to the golf course. After ruminating about this for a long time, I finally (with help from this forum) fugured out that the elevation change of approximately 700 feet over the 22 mile drive to the golf course made a significant difference when I was going home downhill. Lots of factors can change the prediction, but driving at 75-80 mph on the interstate made the biggest difference for me. Around town in traffic, I got substantially better mileage predictions than if I was pushing down the interstate at 75-80.

Which is becoming harder to do, BTW........

Imagine how much "fun" I have when the path into my neighborhood is an 1100ft increase in elevation over the 2 miles to my house, versus the 1100ft downhill glide when I leave. I have learned to ignore any range numbers until I get a good ways away from the house (ICE and BEV).
