Extended Warranty worth it? (GL Class X166)
Assuming that we will probably go over 50,000 miles in 4 years or more, is getting the MB extended warranty worth it? What are most of ya'll getting (length, mileage, and cost)? Thank you in advance.

Well I would say it depends on how long after the 50,000 miles you plan on keeping it. I paid $3,200 for the 7 year 100,000 extended limited warranty from the Austin, TX MB dealership for my 2013 GL550. Austin is somewhat known to sell the cheapest ELW or at least they were when I bought my GL. Houston had quoted me $4,800 for the same warranty. I think it is worth the $3,200 because the turbos are expensive along with most anything major that could go wrong. Basically a risk I wasn't willing to take for just $3,200. Plus the extended limited warranty doesn't have a deductible and is transferable if you decide to sell. It is also fully refundable up to the original factory warranty in case you decide to upgrade before then.

This is an often asked question. It really comes down to risk tolerance. Extended warranties give you some peace of mind, but of course you pay quite a bit up front. I do buy them, and have always spent more than I spent.
You can buy them from someone other than your dealer - both MB and 3rd party.
Consider your typical mileage per year in calculating what warranty to get. It's easy to get confused. For example Clark_CIA really bought an +3 year/+50k mile adder.
I bought what I thought was a 5 year/100k mile EW, but in reality it was a +1year/+50K. I was surprised when my EW expired when I was at 3.5 years and 65K miles. I expired the original warranty after 2.5 years when I went above 50K, then expired the extended warranty 1 year later.

Yes. I bought it from a different dealer than I bought the vehicle from. Like Jim said you can buy from anyone and you don't have to buy right when it is new. I bought mine after I put 13k miles on it.

I bought the the factory extended 5yr/100k warranty for my 13 GL450. I told my dealer I was willing to buy the warranty from the first dealer willing to knock $500 off the retail price of 3000k ..... my dealer took the offer and sold me the coverage for 2500. So, is it worth it? Well....I am covered for the number of years I will own the car..... I drive it 20k a year ( and that won't change ) so the original warranty is extended enough to cover the 5yrs that I plan to hold onto this vehicle. Given the complexity and cost of repair for these vehicles.....I feel it IS worth the "insurance." Key to it is having serious knowledge about how many miles you will be driving and your commitment to the number of years ownership. Just one failure of the major systems after the expiration of the new car warranty can equal or exceed the cost of the extended warranty. If you think of it as "health or life insurance" ( that you hope to never use ) you will be more comfortable with it!

Wouldn't it make more sense to just bank the money from car to car?
Obviously, you have to pay for repairs if something breaks down but I would hope you would get through a few cars before something very expensive happened.

Just traded my 2010 GL 550 with 94k on it . I never used the warranty for anything .
Just scheduled maintenance . So in my experience no.

...and, even though I bought the warranty .....I would be very happy with the same result! ......it's insurance as far as I am concerned, and, frankly I'm happy if I NEVER have to use the insurance!
