New G55 owner and thoughts on brake upgrades in dubai :)
Hey,
Just got the G55 a little over a month back wanted to introduce myself on the forums been following this forum for quite a while. Wanted to know if anyone here has any experience with looking at Brembo brakes or any other options i could consider.

Mercedes G55 AMG
Well i use the g as a daily driver until a week ago had to leave the country for uni and i noticed the brakes started to wear out really fast, i almost din't stop in time on emirates road (Could have been a nasty incident), so i was thinking if i switch to high performance brakes rear and front, or maybe its just my existing pads are faulty. What do you think?

The Standard OEM brakes for the G55 should work effectively on your vehicle. Only reason we would suggest you doing a BREMBO 8 Piston Front and 4 Piston rear is if you decide on doing some performance and wheel upgrade. Now, having the BREMBO upgrade can't hurt you as well. The BREMBO will definitely help you stop your vehicle a lot faster at a shorter distance. Going from a factory 4 piston to an upgraded 8 piston will change the braking ability on your G55 a dramatic difference.

Most likely it's your brake pads. Gargash will be able to tell you what's the condition of the pads and whether they need replacing. In terms of braking distance, on the G55 the limiting factor are the tires not the brakes. The G63 has larger diameter wheels and higher performance tires, so that's why they are using the 6 piston calipers from the ML63. Best way to improve braking distance would be to get stickier tires...at the expense of tread life, road noise, and off-road durability.

Since i've never driven a g55 except the one i own, i was just wondering if the suspension is that stiff when bought stock because even i tiny bump on the road feels like I'm on rocks. I s this normal?

They were very stiff on the 2003 G55, and are only slightly less stiff on current models...but it's a pretty jarring ride...harsher than my Aston. AMG does this to improve high speed stability and to try and compensate for the high center of gravity in corners. You can replace the shock absorbers quite easily with the ones from the G500. Another, more expensive option is the BRABUS Ride Control Suspension upgrade.

I have this Brabus system.. Came on the 2010 G55 I bought last week from Reem Auto... Great difference ofcourse, but makes me feel I want to try the original G55 suspension to see if they are as stiff as the Brabus (turned On)... Ofcourse turned Off they're quite nice...
The Brabus Ride control is an amazing unit, trust us when we say this, most of the customers who've had regular suspension and went over to the BRABUS system, LOVES the Brabus system before of the comfort.

A little wobbly though if on an imperfect highway.. I find myself turning it on on high speed to add stability.

Just noticed today, that brakes aren't that fast to take effect if you slam it! Felt it even dangerous and won't save a person or a car 2m in front of mine even if at low speeds, like easing out of parking, or just after starting to move at a green light, for instance! Too soft and cushiony, not hard with immediate effect! Does that sound normal to you guys?

You need to bleed your brakes. That sounds normal after the brake fluid has overheated a few times or you have developed air bubbles in your brake system. You may want to check the condition of your pads and rotors as well.
If anything, definitely bleed the brakes though, before you slam into the car in front of you

G wagon brake question. Will AMG calipers fit on a G550? What are ones options here? I see there are big brake kits for the G55, but don't see any options for G550's. I am loving everything about my new truck except for the brakes and I wonder if at 30k miles of NYC driving, if the shocks are a little worn. Any event, what are the options for brakes on the G550? I am sorry I didn't move fast enough on a recent set of Brabus suspension. Was just too early on in the learning curve.

Maybe just a technical question. According to Brembo, the front and rear big brake kits from Brembo are the same for the G500 and the G55 MY03-04. Then they say that the fronts changed on G55's for MY2005 onwards, while the rears remained the same for all G wagons. However, there is NO mention of the G550. Does an AMG 2008 caliper fit on a G550? Maybe its just easier to get AMG.

Been sensing an issue with the Brabus shocks... turned to soft (light on button OFF) I get a wobbly steering/car at around speeds of 60 and up (km/hr) if road is not absolutely perfect... once I turn to stiff (light ON) things are almost totally normal and under control... Been the Brabus ten days ago, before this really made itself that obvious, to ask the guys there to check whether shocks are in good order (bought car last month with them installed by 1st or 2nd owner). One of their German managers asked (in German, which I don't understand) one of the German mechanics to come look at them.. said they are originals and that I shouldn't worry about them and that they are approved by the German government! Does that mean they are God-like and will never ever go wrong, even if abused?! My answer is NO. I thought to first go down the route of wheel balance, but then again wheel/car would have wobbled and shaken anyway, even if Brabus system on stiff ride setting, if wheels aren't balanced...

You probably need to get the Brabus Ride Control Upgrade Kit (463-016-81). It was launch in 2012. This upgrade will allow your Ride Control to switch automatically from Soft to Hard Setting if its senses your car is feeling unstable.
There were probably some complaints like yourself, and brabus now offers this feature on all new Ride control from 2012 onwards.
