I have a US spec wheel, I'm in Washington state.
I think the actual steering wheel is from W205 (with black buttons) and airbag is from W217 (leather wrapped)
This is one heck of a restoration effort. This is so inspiring to me with respect to my newly acquired 2001 G55 AMG. Two quick questions for you; what steering wheel will you be using? I would really like to ditch this huge 4-spoked bus shaped steering wheel in favor for a custom 3-spoke newer gen steering wheel.
I was advised by an eBay seller (Ledermann) that my wheel is a single stage airbag and the newer versions are dual-stage airbags thus it will not work. And as for the electronics to control the center dash gauge clusters that may require custom modifications. What are your thoughts and experience thus far with this?
Also, the leather work you've had done... my desire so far is to start with my door panel inserts (although I only have the top one), do you think your interior shop would be willing to fab door inserts and/or other things for me and then ship to me? I don't have access to an interior shop near me. My thought is, if they have the templates already, it would be relatively simple for them to fab the work. Feel free to PM your reply if you'd prefer that.
Thank you
As for the steering wheel, I am installing W205 steering wheel and airbag. I had to send it out to Russia so they can modify it in order for the steering wheel buttons to work with my 2002 car. They tell me that airbag will work but airbag light will need to be cleared. Ill see what I will need to do when I install it.
Center dash buttons, ill see if they give me any problems when I install them.
I have all the templates for the door leather trim. I'll see if he will be willing fabricate door inserts.
What I did was have him diamond stitch pieces of leather and I used the top and bottom inserts I had. I pulled the old leather off of them and glued the new diamond stitched lather on to them.
Thank you

I guess I'll wait for your steering wheel install before I proceed. Did you have to send both of the steering wheels to Russia? I've seen a lot of members here mention Russia as a good source for such modifications, but I haven't seen a link to any shop/s.
With my 2001, all four of my doors only have the upper insert, so I don't even have a frame that I could use.
I sent them my old steering wheel buttons and control panel that's in the steering wheel and the new steering wheel. They did the work and shipped it all back to me. I paid for shipping to and back and labor cost.
Dol.Car is who did the work for me. You can find them on Instagram.
Will you be upgrading to a different gauge cluster? I would love to upgrade to a newer gauge cluster but fear none of it will work. Any ideas or insight on that?
have you decided/gotten either an aftermarket or factory radio unit yet? I decided to do the same interior update that you are doing with the hazard and climate control switch blocks but when I ordered an aftermarket replica radio that was said and looked to fit, the unit was too curved to fit flush with either switch block. Are there different radios for the g class from the 2008 update to 2011? To clarify, I'm updating to this interior. Thanks for your help
Grane, just FYI, we are talking about aftermarket W203 unit that uses Android software.
Its the unit style that fits W203 from 2005-2007
Hopefully it will work on my G500 without any issues... well see
Ebay seller was: junan002

Thank you for the info. I will look for your continued success that I hope continues with this unit.
I have been doing more wiring over the last few days, not much to post but pulled power source for all four door sills, installed both door mirrors, wired the flood lights on the door mirrors, wired turn signals in the door mirrors and Blindspot triangles.
Pulled power source wires for door panel mood lighting and under dash mood lighting.
Next on the list is to wrap the headliner in Alcantara and install it.

I have a 2003 G55 and could really use the mood lighting! What parts did you use and where did you source the power for the lights? Would the lights just turn on with the rest of the dash panels at night?
I could not find G-wagon mood lighting for the doors to be sold separately, i checked dealer parts catalogs and they are just not sold separately.
So I actually purchased all 4 door panels from newer G wagon with mood lighting built in. Im sure you can make it work some how by using LED lights and manufacturing a channel to hide the lights in (similar to OEM), etc... and thats what I considered at first, but at the end, over time, I kept my eye out for newer door panels that came with the mood lighting and I purchased them on Ebay, one at a time.
As far as under the dash lights that I will be installing (pictured in the pic I posted above), those came off from W221 door panel wood trim. Purchased couple rear door wood trims on Ebay for $20 each and removed the light strips.
I wanted the mood lighting to be always on when ignition is ON, so I pulled power source from the glove box light wire.
