Wonderful progress! I can't wait to see the finished result. I started to tear my G apart a few weeks ago, I'm currently in the process of putting in the sound deadening now!
I noticed you're using a w203 cluster. I know it's possible to swap housings, I've done it. I got the mileage data, etc to work, with the protocol converter from Russia, but one problem I had was with the fuel gauge. It always read empty. In order to fix it, I would have had to change my fuel level sensor. Instead I went ahead and bought a 2008 non-amg cluster and swapped that in. Works great. I want to switch back to the 203 AMG cluster though. Did you send it out to Russia?
Also, Important info for others that have PM'd me about my hazard switch response earlier. You can buy it from any Benz dealership with the part number 463-905-04-00. I paid 361.88 for it. Keep in mind, this is just the switch block, it does not include the wood trim around it. Part number for the wood trim would be any variant of the 2036804482 number. You should just goto eBay and grab one for a c-class. Make sure it's not the curved model but the "straighter" topped version. Finally, you can actually use the C class switch block and save some money. Some guys in Russia on Drive2.RU are using C class switches. They said ahead of time they didn't care about losing functionality in the rear wiper - they used the version without a switch in that place. However, you could either find one for a C class wagon, or you can find one that has the rear curtain and see if that triggers it. That could save you a few hundred bucks. Of course, as KB said earlier, you'd have to modify the brackets to make it work.
Best of luck to all.
KB looking great man! Let me know about those switches! :P
Thank you
Nice, good luck with the sound deadening. I can't wait to hear what improvement it did on my car.
The W203 cluster I have in there is just so I have something plugged in. Im actually purchasing a brand new 2008-2012 / G55 cluster.
I was going to swap out the internals from W203 C55 cluster in to my original housing.... but I think its just a bit too messy and I wanted a clean look. I know its doable, but I changed my mind on it.
This is amazing. am happy for you. A lot of people embark on this kind of journey and usually give up halfway for different reasons. this is coming together nicely.
How do you mitigate the risk of missing something and having to tear it all apart once done? Would hate for you to finish and have to start dismantling again. Do you test each part as you go? or you just going with blind faith?
yes, i test everything after I install it (lights, switches, mechanisms, etc...)
Sometimes I have to remove something after I install it. I had to remove 5th door door panel few times and adjust it here and there to make sure it sits right. Because after you add leather on to some parts, you change the tolerance / clearance on parts so you have to predict it or sometime make adjustments afterwards.
Looks GREAT. Its been quite a journey. Almost there. Then comes the shakedown phase. In my experience that phase can be enjoyable because you are at least driving the vehicle and issues tend to be smaller and more easily managed. In the meantime you have become the "guru" for the G Wagon having done a frame up restoration. Bring it home man!! Best of luck in the home stretch.
All I can say is wow! This is an amazing build that I've learned so much from. It's definitely inspiring me to update mine. THANK YOU. Also, love the interior color combo and quality.
kobzarhomes hope all is well, I havent been on the mbworld lately but I see your almost done with your project.
Im contacting you because I know your the only guy who can help me with my project g500. Im stuck!
how can I contact you presonally???
This needs to be featured by Mercedes when it's done - amazing build. It looks brand new in those outside pictures.
I love the seat cooler button. I completely forgot about those cubbies under the seat and checked them out on mine - happy to find a little additional storage!
amazing progress!! If I may, I'd like to make a small suggestion while you have your center console all apart. Deep at the very bottom at about where the center SAM unit is under all that, lives your Transfer Case Control Unit and I would highly recommend you replace that now prior to reassembling everything. the older w463s have known issues with that unit and that unit has been revised & updated 7 or 8 times now over the years to the current version (my local MB dealer told me the number of superseded part numbers). The new most recently updated control unit's part number is 463-901-07-00. You'll save yourself the headache in the future of having to deal with that and take everything apart again. That is the unit that causes the older W463s to get stuck in neutral, or the L/H indicator goes blank etc etc.
