35" Tires on 2009 G-500

Hi all,
Just bought my 2009 G-500, and would like to replace to 35" tires. Got today 275/50-20" (app. 31"). Got some question though:

Would I need to lift the car?
Would changing to 35" tires, would really change the driving style? impact power?

I noticed gear ratio at the axles are 4.37:1, which should be low enough I think?

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thank you for any info,

I've been doing some research, 35 inch would be pushing it, even with a lift. Consider that the G Wagon 4x4 squared has 325/55R22 tires as stock, which are around 36 inches, and that truck is mega lifted.

I'm going to lift mine a couple of inches max, and I'm thinking I can get maybe 33.6 inch tires on it (305/65R18 - I have the older G55 9.5 inch wide wheels) Pretty sure that would also require wheel spacers as well, for turning clearance.

Let me know how it turns out, I can't find much information on lift w/tire sizes for the G anywhere.

Thank you Limey,
I also plan on lifting 2" only, got 20" rim, so looking at 275/60R20 (33"), might try also the 275/65R20 (34")

Well, good luck, I think 34 inch tires are going to be tight, even with a 2 inch lift.

I'll let you know what setup I end up with next Spring, I have my eye on a 40mm lift with ORC or Thor springs and the 33.5 in tires mentioned. I'll probably have to do some experiments with just one wheel.

Then, if you still want to carry the spare, you have to worry about the rear door weight limit. These tires will be 15-20 lbs heavier.

Actually, I just ordered a 50 mm lift spacer, after I ordered a 40 mm last week. So if you want I'm willing to sell them to you. After I'll get them probably within a week, going to try to fit the 34", I'll let you know whats with it.

Appreciate the offer, but I'm going with new springs rather than a lift spacer. Yes, do let me know how it works out mate.

I have BFG K02s on my 2010 G550. I kept the stock rims so the dimensions are 275/70/18 all around. I also have a 40mm lift via an ORC/Bilstein setup and 30mm H&R spacers.

Without the lift, I highly doubt there would be clearance with the larger tires. It's close as is. If you do decide to lift yours, strongly consider a sway bar. The only one I could find is made by ORC but I drove my G for a little bit without it on the freeway and there is an uncomfortable amount of body sway at higher speeds.

Nice, you've done exactly what I want to do to mine. So, you got a thickened sway bar, front and back? End links too? Longer brake lines? No rubbing with the wheel spacers?

I have the same spare tire cover as well, any issues with the increased weight of the spare?

Sway bar only in the back. Longer brake lines in the front and a Brembo Big Brake kit on the back. I have additional rear lines that are supposed to go on the rear but they won’t fit for some reason. And no rubbing with the wheel spacers.

OK thanks, if you can PM any info on where you got the parts, that would be great.

could you just post it? I've got most of these parts already bookmarked as I plan to do the same, but would like to compare options

The winch, tray, sway bar, Bilstein/ORC suspension setup, stainless steel brake lines and Kleeman ECU flash came from Viking Offroad (www.vikingoffroad.com)

The VTS wheel cover, differential covers and transfer case cover came from www.g-wagenaccesories.com.

The H&R wheel spacers, brush guard grilles and black wheel center caps came from www.fourbyfourclub.com

The rear Brembo brakes came from www.racetechnologies.com (one of Brembo's US distributors) who sent me to Supreme Power Inc. (www.supremepower.com) for installation

The rock sliders, front & rear underride protection and turn signal guards came from GfG (Gesselschaft für Geländewagen) at www.gfg-shop.de/gb/

I got the tires from www.fourwheelparts.com and a few other random parts from ORC (Off-Road Center) at www.orc-shop.de/en/

In addition, I purchased some OEM items off eBay and other smaller more generic items off Amazon.

Www.gwagenparts.com has a wide selection of items but I never actually purchased anything from them. However, I have met with an employee of the company to look at my G and he was very helpful.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

All great info, thanks. Why go with the rear Brembos again, just because the other brake lines wouldn't fit? Were those the ones supplied by Viking?

Yours is very close to what I'll be doing to mine soon, I'll return to this thread and post up the before and after with some pics.

The brake lines were from Viking who import them from ORC I believe.

The rear Brembos are strictly to have more stopping power (larger calipers and bigger, two-piece discs). I only got the rears because Brembo doesn't make fronts small enough to fit my 18" rims although that may be changing soon.

Hi All, Just to update I have installed a 40 m"m lift spacers, and 275X65X20 tires (34.2), got into 2 problems. The original springs just colapsed, and started to rub the bump stom, also the tires started to rub the radius arms when turning. I changed the lift spacers to 50 m"m spring lift from Old Man EMU, and returned the tires back to original. I ordered and waiting now for wheel spacers H&R, and hope for best.

Sorry to hear about the issues... what size wheel spacers did you end up ordering? I'll be curious if you can get the rubbing resolved. I think for my idea on 305 width tires I'm going to need at least a 50mm wheel spacer.

As I plan to stay with the 275X65X20, I ordered 30 m"m wheel spacers
If it wont do, I'll go down to 275X60X20, that is 33.1" tires Also, as I had Cooper MT tires, I had lots of noise in the car

Finally got the H&R wheel spacers, 30 mm, installed the 275X65X20 , 34.4" tires, with the 50 mm lift springs from old man emu. Everything works just great, even tested some offroading today.

I am running 35x12.5r20s with about 4.5" of lift or so. It was a lot more to go to this level (with King external reservoir shocks, the military trailing arm brackets, king steering stabilizer (which does not exactly bolt on btw), and more, the list goes on) from a 40-50mm lift. It will be going back in January for more tweaks to tie up some things for offroad. That being said, even at this level I had to add Viking Offroad 1.25" bolt on wheel spacers to prevent rubbing on the trailing arm.

Looks the way I like it,
I had to do most of it in my Jeep Wrangler with 5" lift. with the merc I plan only some soft offroading
What year is your car? I lost some engine power changing to the bigger tires

Nice set up, that's a pretty high lift! What kind of offroad lights are those, and where did you get them?

They're cheap Nilight 4.5" round spots..I wanted to test run the size and location prior to committing to a visionX set of cannons, which is up next.

Just had 365mm Brembos put on the front. Brembo didn't make front brakes to fit the OEM 2010 rims so it took about 6 months for them to engineer it but they finally got it done. Supreme Power in Fullerton, CA installed them.

As for some of the other parts... The dust covers on the front two ORC/Bilstein shocks melted on to the cats. The turn signal guards and the rock sliders purchased from GfG have started to rust a little bit. A screw broke on one of the brush guard grilles but that's about it after many miles of on-road and off-road traveling since my last post.

Thanks for the update on how your mods are doing. That's a little disappointing that you have some rust already...
Nice upgrade on the front brakes! How much of a braking improvement is it? I imagine the braided lines help some as well. So is this a one-off custom build, or does Brembo offer this size brakes that you can buy and adapt for the G?

Receiving some of my parts (shocks, springs, spacers) this week to get ready for my build here pretty soon. I'll probably start a new thread, though I don't think I'm doing anything you haven't done already.
