2016 G63 AMG
I suppose there is no wrong answer here, but IMO the G63 AMG hands down is the winner. It looks better, sounds better and has more of an aggressive stance and little tid bits that make it nicer such as the seats, the leather, steering wheel etc. It obviously also has more power, but honestly it has (flame suit on) probably plenty of power in the 550 for what this is. I love my G63, I would never consider a 550 because I like the 63 that much better, but as far as power is concerned, and you dont care about the aesthetics that are important to me (and most of us) the 550 is a great choice for the right consumer.

The main issue I see with this release is you are paying the AMG tax for the same drivetrain the 550 will have and in reality how much different are the 550/63. The "AMG" specific enhancements costs are nominal if any. Mercedes makes an extra $30k for essentially nothing. The two cars had more of a separation in previous gen allowing the price difference easier to swallow. As is the case in this buyer demographic nobody really cares about price. I have yet to see how the two engines are different other than turbos. The 550 buyer is the real winner here, if AMG was extensive in developing the facelift.

Wow, IMO the brush guard on the 2019 G63 looks utterly stupid and pointless. What in the he*l was Mercedes thinking? New 63 looks so, so much better without the guard. On the other hand, the new G550 looks great with the brush guard. So funny... first time ever a 550 actually looks better than the more expensive 63!
So relieved I got a brand new 2018 G63!!!

Does anyone know if the brush guard can be taken off, also legally? In Europe, they are not even legal, but I was wondering if they are a requirement in the US or whether it is ok to simply not have them - I assume it is relatively easy to have them take off.

You just need to buy the two chrome pieces that cover the holes where it gets bolted into the bumper ($700ish I think for the pair). Those can be bought from any MB Dealer, and online.

Thank you very much for this. The brush guard looks like utter crap on the G63. It's such an iconic feature on the G. Gonna be a tough pill for me. They didn't update the DOG with pricing yet right? The DOG states Oct for the 63. Edition 1 should be sooner no?

I was told there are some delays due to the 12.3" screen and the 8XX series leather interiors. I think certain paints are delayed as well. Not for the people that ordered really early (like the first available times) but for those ordering now.

Just spoke with AMG exec at a Cars and Cappuccino intro of the 2019 G63. Apparently the brush guard is different on the G63 to accommodate the 360 deg visibility cameras for the parking package (Code 996). That package will not be available on the 2019 G550.

Brush Guard and 360 Cameras
That is interesting info. In my order, though, for a G550 I have 'Code EZ8 Parking Assist PARKTRONIC with 360 Camera' ... strange. However, that exec may be right in that it is trickier to accommodate the camera in the G63 than in the G550, as it has a different front. I wonder if the brush guard is the same in the G550 with and without AMG package?

I agree the 63 looks much better but I opted for the 550 because of the more comfortable suspension. Coming from a Range Rover. My build date is Mid August. If the 63 isn’t too rough after I test drive, I’ll trade in for it. Also worried about their the sunglasses holder. I’ve seen some picture with a holder and some with a speaker there instead...which doesn’t really make sense since I didn’t see a stereo upgrade option on the order guide.
Does anyone here have something earlier ?
