Used G55 for $35k, thoughts?
I don't know a ton about these. Always liked them, and wouldn't mind having another extra vehicle for fun. Would probably put on less than 3-5k miles a year on it.
I know a local guy is selling a 2003 G55 with 75,000 miles on it for around $36,000 asking. Thoughts? He's done updates such are the newer 20" amg split 5 spokes, G63 grille, smart radio and new subwoofer, etc.
Just looking for opinions if these are horrible to own or if those that have them like them and just want some opinions from you guys.

If the car has been well maintained and is in good overall cosmetic condition I don't see how you could go wrong with a $35K "toy". They are expensive to maintain but you will be putting a limited amount of miles on it so that will mitigate excessive costs for wear and tare. Depending on condition that price is probably at the bottom of the depreciation cycle.

Thanks. Well,. I just called him as I couldn't get down to SEE it in person until this saturday and he said someone else is buying it. Oh well, guess this one wasn't meant to be.

I've been looking for G500's of similar vintage with similar miles. Never have I found one with under 100k miles for under $40k.

Thanks, but it sold. And the only thing I didn't like was when the seller said "It has some rust, but what can you expect, it's a 2003"
Is that common on these?

Usually frames are solid with surface rust. It's one of those buy it and drive until it falls apart, or else you'll end up spending more than what you paid in keeping it looking like new.

Very common. Almost every 2003 in the midwest I've seen has rust on it. You have to inspect the windows, especially the front windshield and it might not even be visible.

I have the classic G550 and have rented GL450s from Sixt and Hertz. I think they are very different cars..
The G550 drives like truck, steering is heavy, interior is narrow but tall, you and other pax sit really high up, belt lines are low, pillars are small hence visibility is awesome. The stadium seating in the back is cool but not exactly comfortable for long drives. The ride is fairly supple (at least the 18 G550 is) though a bit bouncy at highway speeds. It's a really fun truck to drive and at least the V8 G's can go 80+ easily if needed. The noise from the side pipes also add to the drama...
The GL is super comfortable, you sit a little lower (dash is taller), seats are amazing - my pax typically fall asleep as soon as we hit highway speeds. It's that comfortable! I love the GL, definitely would consider when I need a long distance daily driver SUV
The new G probably closes the gap in terms of comfort...
and yes when I was looking at used G's, 35-40k is about the lowest price to get into a decent CA legal 463 with less than 90k miles and those cars still needed some cosmetic and mechanical work after inspection
