I called my dealer again.....still no idea when they'll have a replacement windshield.

This is not the kind of service I expected when I bought my car......MB has seriously dropped the ball.

Hey guys, just wanted to provide my tip to prevent cracked windshield.

I had Exoshield done to the windshield, which wont prevent it completely but it will definitely add a great layer of protection and provide you with a sense of security.
But in addition to that I have my sunroof opened (lifted) the slightest little bit. I'm no scientist, but I am fairly certain that the glass is just not strong enough for how pressurized the interior cabin is. When a rock with force comes at the windshield, it seems that the inside pressure allows it to crack much easier. By alleviating the pressure inside a bit through a window or sunroof, it lessens the blow. The small lift opening in the sunroof doesn't even allow water in even during rain or car wash so I just leave it like that permanently and drive with confidence.

I actually tilt the sunroof open almost all the time because I hate the whistle due to cabin pressure. Your theory of high cabin pressure accelerating crack propagation seems to be viable given the pressure is significant.

In Canada you get the heated windshield as standard. Does this make the windshield stronger?

I just got a call from MB Customer Service.......

The latest word is I might have a replacement windshield by the middle of October.

I wish I was making this up.....I'm done. I plan on getting rid of the car.

I understand your frustration, but this is a new model generation and your gonna having some teething issues... would i be pissed if it where me, absolutely I've heard thru the grapevine MB is aware of the issue and new windshields are coming... I doubt they will officially admit the issue, would open them to litigation, possible lawsuits etc....

But history shows they eventually get most this stuff figured out...

If you really like the G on the whole, id' ride it out...

This is not a big deal. Exoshield the new one and you shouldn't have any problems.

Just curious, is MB replacing under warranty? Highly unlikely.

no way they replace it under warranty. Out of your pocket or your insurance policy.

All USA models have heated windshield standard, so not sure if that plays into it or not.

I am waiting for a 2020 G63 (just built and on its way to the boat) and I hope this isn't a problem due to a design defect.

My 2013 G550 has gotten lots of rock chips over time and I have never gotten any chips/cracks on any other car I have had. The physics of it make the car more prone to glass damage, it seems that there is a similar thread over in a Jeep forum with lots of people with cracked glass just a few days/miles into ownership: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/for...eld-club.5935/

It is also worth noting, that while I did get lots of rock chips on the 2013 there were also a few rocks that hit but left no damage. Maybe the new glass is weaker/thinner?

Ok, so all US models have heated windshield as standard. Interesting. I guess it is a combination of all factors, thinner outside glass due to the heat film inside, cabin pressure and the fact that it is glued in place and therefore rigid.

Thanks for reigning me in guys....my wife basically said the same thing. She knows I probably wouldn't be happy with anything else and I should just ride it out.

I have the glass protection that my dealer offered so I won't be out of pocket anything.

Mine was replaced 5 days ago and now applied with 2 layers Bray film. If I were u I’d yell at service manager for not put your windshield request as priority.

If I wasn't waiting for an appointment with loaner car, I could get it replaced even earlier. Try call other dealerships in your area see if they could get the windshield faster.

I’m scheduled for a replacement on the 10th. Little over two months after ordering the new one.

Just joined the broken windshield fraternity with my 2019 G63. Having Exo Shield installed. Question: When you had yours installed, did the dealer have to hold the car for a few days for proper curing? I was told that was necessary. Thanks in advance.

nah, the windshield. I heard exoshield only need a overnight cure.
