2019 G63 Heated Windshield Question

I just looked through my manual to see how to turn on the heated windshield, and it says to put the "defrost button" on full. But all this seems to do, is to turn the front blower on to full. My build spec specifically listed a "heated windshield", and my insurance company stated that because my windshield is specifically listed as "heated" that it will be subject to an extra significant premium if I want windshield replacement insurance. There are no little heater wire lines in this windshield like in the prior model years. Does anybody have any idea if the windshield is really heated - or is it just that it is heated by the front slot blower?

Usually there’s a separate switch for it, my rr had it and you could see faint mesh too..,looks like you have none of these so it might not even have the heated windshield ...

If you look at the windshield does it have zig zagged lines in the windshield that are hard to see if you really focus in? My RR had that - hard to see unless you look at the windshield instead of through it. If not, and no wires etc then I think they "forgot" to add it (aka they didnt have one so they just kept pushing the build on in the assembly)...

It does say that "Electrically heated windshield" is standard equipment on benz.com

I agree, unless you can see faint lines/squiggles in the windscreen (like my '18 G has and my last 3 Range Rovers)...it seems that you do NOT have the heated windshield option!

Lot's of inconsistencies with the 2019's. 2020 will likely get it all worked out.

I can’t even tell and usually in Canada, they come with heated windshields. In my car specs it includes it (edition 1). I called my dealer for you to get more info as I am curious as well. Apparently from what I heard, there is no button for the heater windshield, it turns on I think when defrost is turned on, but there’s no button for it. Apparently it works on its own, maybe the information I have provided is invalid because this is what my SA told me. But he also told me that if you check your serial number and HAVE the code “F49” it means that you have it.

Grabs from the manual. See what it says about being able to see a clear area with a light - anyone try that?

Interesting - I wonder if it is a temperature controlled "auto on"? Or "on with defrost only" function.

Yes, my 2018 G63 has it. Just like others have stated, there is a very faint mesh like material inside the windshield. It's easier to see in some certain lighting conditions than others. I'm not sure how it's turned on though, I believe it's activated with the "windshield button."

Yes. Manual is vague and unhelpful.

The little array inside the windshield to the right of the rear view mirror is an electric heater that uses radio frequency and induction to heat the windshield. It is an amazing new technology not found in many other cars. There are invisible elements in the windshield that emanate from the area to the right of the windshield where you can see a little grid from which the invisible wires spread.

The technology has been ported over from the avionics industry and is quite cool!

Thank-you very much for that! I did some more research and discovered that our windshields have embedded tiny silver thread inside that are not visible. The "radio permeable area" of the windshield to the right of the rear view mirror will allow a radio signal to go through......but these windshields act a lot like Faraday cages!

As a result, your radar detector will not work if you mount it to the windshield like I did on the top left drivers side. I had thought that there was something wrong with my new Uniden R3! Nope! I just doesn't detect a radar signature unless the signature is quite strong! Only choice is to mount it in the permeable area as is in your picture.....or get a professionally installed one mounted in the front of the vehicle.

Personally, I'm happy to just turn up the sensitivity of the Uniden and will keep it mounted on the top left.....it's just good to know about this quirk!

Thank-you!
