DGI’s 2005 G55 Ownership Log

my better half (wife) insists I do not lift. I told her that if I dont lift, i’ll be doing power mods. Lol
I think that by the time Im through with maintenance, body work and rust repair, the play budget for this year will be pretty thin.
wasnt going to lift until I needed tires anyway so there may still be hope

Got some time yesterday and thought id throw in the Kenwood head unit.
Simple enough plan. Match up the same color wires on the Kenwood harness to the adaptor harness. Run the microphone. Connect harnesses, antenna adaptor, etc
Simple enough except unit is not powering on. When I push the “eject” button for the CD it attempts to eject a cd but no power on unit.
It was late last night when I stopped messing with it. I’ll take it all back apart next week to test all the connections I made.
At least the dash doesnt have a hole in it anymore

Performed the differential and transfer case services. Pretty straight forward, drain and fill. Truck had 81,003 miles on it. Took about an hour to do all three.
The transfer case drain/fill plugs had washers on them that I was unaware of before hand. Reused what was on the truck and torqued everything down. Will check to see if any leaks appear before I start driving it.
Left the truck on the lift as I want to do front brake pads next and figured it would be easier to just have it ready whenever I get a free moment.
Before I started, took the family to Target for some stuff we needed and I got to work some heat into the fluids. Found this little guy in the Hot Wheels section:

Drinkin with a buddy last night and we were talking about the truck. Hes a mechanic/shop owner. He asked me if it was easy to take the dash apart as I had it buttoned up so it wouldnt look like ****.
3 min later it looked like the above picture.
Some interesting discoveries:
1. There is only constant power coming into the head unit but that slot in the harness is empty so there is NO POWER coming to the head unit other than some low voltage, maintenance power. Theres a Constant Power wire there but unless I want to manually turn the radio on and off (and risking a dead battery) I need to run power from somewhere else.
2. The harness adaptor that I purchased did not connect the speakers to the head unit. Had to connect the "remote" wire to the car speakers... Wierd.
Ultimately I need to run a wire from a keyed fuse in the fuse box under the glove compartment to the radio and that should solve my issues.
Might get to it today but the weather is nice and theres stuff around the house that needs to get done before it gets colder.

Ran a wire from fuse #47 under glove box to run key power to the radio.
Cut a hole in back of glove box to pass USB connection into glove box also.
Everything is back together and works great!

Front brake pads were a breeze. Brake caliper ratchet tool makes quick work of closing brake pistons, highly recommended
Started valve cover gasket/plug/wire job on drivers side. Top right valve cover bolt a pain as fuel line was in the way.
Plugs near firewall fiddly with steering shaft in the way but not impossible. Swivel/wobble plug socket to the rescue!
Need to pick up some brass brushes today to remove old gasket material off air chambers on valve cover. No time to wrap anything up tonight, will finish tomorrow. And complete other side as well.
Still need to:
change oil
fuel filter
dip stick gasket leak
oil filter housing reseal
After this is done, i’ll drop the headliner to redo it and install some dynamat (or similar) on roof and inside door panels.
Sunroof panel needs a respray as well as pass rear fender flare.

cleaned all the coils also in prep for new wires
All new plugs installed. Just need to button up everything and do do an oil change.
seems the truck was well loved by previous owner as the plugs are not factory originals. Passenger side breather chamber has been resealed previously as well
The Best of Mercedes & AMG

Disconnected the fuel line to access that top right cover bolt on the drivers side, didnt realize how much fuel was held in the rail lol
FCP Euro sent the MB Breather Chamber gasket compound that was extremely difficult to press out of the tube manually but seemed to be very thick and evenly applied.
Performed an oil change before startup. Grill guard makes a handy bottle holder come to find out lol
Truck purs like a kitten! Looking forward to the drive to work!

Code P0507 accompanied with a fast idle
Post #13 here: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...-rpm-help.html
Im at work right now and can feel the hose on the back of the blower out of place but dont have the time/space to fiddle with it. Going to stop by a buddy's shop after work and plug it back in.
Drove it all day yesterday though and all is good except for the high idle.
Next stop: getting the head liner repaired!

Went by my buddy’s shop after work and what a pain this little metal tube was to get back into the grommet in the back of the supercharger, mainly because you cant easily see where the hole is.
Found out the W463’s hood does have a “service position” lol
Remove hood strut from fender and carefully lay back against windshield
Snap-On camera to aid, little success
This picture from google helped illustrate where the pipe needed to go
My buddy was talking with customers and I ended up laying across the hood with two flashlights and weird angles to get a peek at where the pipe needed to go.
Idle back to normal, CEL reset. Silky smooth drive-ability restored

The more I drive it after its recent service, the more I enjoy its new smoothness!
Attended a birthday party on a farm yesterday and leaving, I backed into a tree (so much for effectiveness of backup sensors lol)
Now im looking for a spare tire cover... at least the chrome surround was not damaged

Or add some storage: https://www.g-wagenaccessories.com/p...ercedes-gwagen
But my wife insists that the spare tire cover on the back is one of her favorite styling elements on the truck.
Removing the extra weight would be a welcome addition also but Happy Wife...

I just bought a 2016 cpo g63 and learning about car when I have time. What tire were you thinking about buying?? I just swapped out the original Yokohana advan st summer tires for Pirelli scorpion zero all season and was hoping this tire would be good in NY winter with ice & snow??
Keep up the good work!!

My truck came with Pirelli Scorpion Zeros and im curious how they will handle the Mid Atlantic winter as well. My model's tire size seems to only be offered by one or two manufacturers so Im stuck if I retain the same tire size.
In the past I've had ALOT of luck with Toyo Tires. Ive had their Open Country AT2 on three different SUVs and they never skipped a beat in the winter months and the tire lasted a very long time (i've only worn through one set so far at 55k miles)
Enjoy your new ride! Very curious how the G63 handles up in the Big Apple!? Driving around yesterday I came to the conclusion that unless my coffee thermos has a closing lid, i cannot use it in my truck. Was constantly wiping up spilled coffee LOL

Unfortunately the Pirelli Scorpions are terrible in snow. They must be changed to winter tires. We have these tires on our new 2019, and even with brand new treads, they are not good at all in snow and slush.

A member here really hooked me up today with some parts he had laying around after upgrading his truck! Cant wait to continue with the rejuvenation of the G!
Turns out the Pirelli Scorpion Zero on the truck currently is a “all season” tire but we’ll see how effective it is this winter. Planning on swapping them out by next winter either way. Found a neat little calculator online and I think a 285/60-18 will be a nice compromise
The Mini Clubman is on my lift waiting for new brakes currently and the my Mustang comes home from an engine overhaul so I may have a friend install the shocks.
Either way, alot of progress happening with the help of good people!

Was going back and fourth to Lowe's yesterday buying/returning Christmas decorations when the truck started sputtering. Gas light was on when leaving the house but I figured i'd make it to the gas station since there was one on the way.
I normally drive around with the "Miles to Empty" gauge on display but when the "Reserve" screen lights up the other screen goes away.
Long story short, I ran out of gas. To add insult to injury I stopped across the street from the gas station but there was a road barrier between us. Of course they didnt have any spare gas jugs so my wife had to come get me LOL
Live and learn.
Cleared the misfire codes that resulted from the dry situation and the truck runs great again.
Trip meter read 346miles on the last tank lol Safe to say i'll be refueling at 300 miles from now on.
Still averaging 13.5 mpg per tank (even after the tune up)

Drivers door lock stopped working. Ordered a new door lock actuator from local dealer as it will arrive on Monday (FCP Euro would take until the middle to late of next week to deliver).
Giddy up!
