G63s and a few others
2020 G63 as daily driver?

Expecting a G63 soon and wondering how it would be as a daily driver. I have driven the older models a few times and the thought of that as my daily driver makes me shudder, but from what I hear the new one is drastically improved and compares favorably to Range Rover in comfort. Is that correct? All my driving is urban driving in and around NYC.

I test drove one with my wife and since she is going to be the primary driver it needed to be comfortable for her, and it was so we have one on order now.

New ride is smooth and tight. Has all the creature comforts. Can be tricky to get in/out of the car but you get used to it. Consumes copious amounts of fuel. I see zero real issues with this as a daily. The older Gs were harsh, old tech, and quirky and I suspect many were bought and traded within 6months due to this harsh reality. Suspect there will be fewer quick flips as a result.

it'd be a fine daily driver - very comfortable, sits up high so you can see and manuever well, etc. The old one I would say no way to. But the new one is great in terms of daily driving.

As a matter of interest - how nightmarish are you finding it parking (notably around height of parking garages).

Most garages near me are 80" so I have few issues in the NYC / NJ area. One at the Newport Mall where I get the truck detailed is 6'8". I JUST fit, in fact I need to drive around the signs that hang down or I would hit them. Once I am in the garage, I fit, but on my first try I did open the sunroof so I could make sure I was not going to scrape :-) Scary but it fit.

It will work as a daily driver....the wear and tear and the gas mileage aren’t really a strong suit of a g wagon. ...I’m seeing 10-11.5 MPG which is expensive, which I can overlook, but it is a pain to fill-up so often...My 2018 raptor gets 14.5 and holds around 32 gallons...it get me through the week without a second fill up...the g wagon will make sure you spend time at the pumps....it is very comfortable to drive...not quite as smooth and quiet as a Range Rover (wind noise at 75mph) which can make driving at 80mph a little more of a challenge —-but it is definitely an acceptable daily driver ...

cheers

It's the best daily driver I've had in the AMG lineup. Easy to drive, very comfortable, and people get the F* out of your way!

I daily drive our 2020 G63, more comfortable than our 2013 G550.

It is a 10 mile one-way commute with an average speed of ~20 MPH on a interstate and city streets with lots of traffic.

I guess it depends on what your commute looks like but I really enjoy it.

My G63 on 22" wheels factory barely fits in garages with 6'6" and I enter those garages that state that as their max in SF all the time. It's close. Uncomfortably close. I unconscionably duck my head ever time as if that is somehow going to protect the roof of my G. SFO short term parking is 6'6" and it tells me my truck is to tall; but it fits.

The garage in Japantown is the closest to the roof height for Gwagon.

Great daily. I won’t be taking on long trips due to limited fuel range, but its a great vehicle for around town. Only thing I’m not thrilled with is the poor turning radius. I would recommend the 20” wheels for better ride and less chance of curb rash.

+1 on the daily driver question, now that I have >1000 miles on my 550. My wife is a bit grouchy with the inelegant climb up into the seats, but once there, she really digs the heated massage feature, the mood lighting and the visibility. So net net a big success. I do wish it had a bigger fuel tank.

Know it well! Check out SFO Short Term parking and report back. They actually have an indicator that tells me the G63 is too tall, reverse and use Long Term. You have to hit the button like 5 times before it will give you a ticket!

I put on Ridge Grapplers (285/50/r20) which raised the height a little - been paranoid about parking at SFO since. Last week I parked in International and walked to domestic just in case. Is the general consensus the G will fit? I do notice when in another vehicle that the inside of the domestic lots at SFO seem a lot hight than 6'6' though the indicator says otherwise.

When I went to school in SF, I use Ellis& O’ Farrell garage or fifth and mission garage behind Westfield for downtown shopping. ( both of them are Gwagon friendly, lmao)
other places were much easier to find street parking.

My wife and I spec'd out our G 63 last month, and now we're waiting for our April allocation.

I read several reviews (and comments from owners on this forum) saying that the new G 63 is comfortable to drive around town and long drives. I mentioned this to my wife, and she said "I hope I can drive it without any problems". I was surprised that she had any concerns at all. She's petite (5' 2" and 115 pounds) and slightly intimidated by the G 63. She drives a Toyota Land Cruiser everywhere without any problems at all. I just assumed that she'd be comfortable driving a G 63. Does anybody have any feedback from their wives and/or girlfriends (pun intended) who have driven the new G wagon? I'm hoping for positive feedback that will put my wife at ease.

Got it primarily as a family vehicle and my wife primarily drives it on the weekdays and she is NOT a car person. She’s very happy with it as a daily and we’ve taken few road trips as well - very well balanced and comfortable

My wife thought it was a big box that was too hard to drive, until I talked her into a test drive. She still thinks it is a big box but not hard to drive, and we have one on order now for her.

I'm selling mine. My wife and I had always wanted a G since we were financially able. We waited for the new one and found a dealer with 2020 allocation for G550. I built and specked it exactly how I wanted, but I never ever could get comfortable driving it. Your knees are basically in the dash, not much support on the legs, as I like to sit down in the seat. I am of athletic build, 5'10" 170#. This truck was everything I was hoping for from a road presence and driving position, but that's where it stops. Long highway stints I was experiencing driver fatigue. The wind noise on the highway, and weight of the steering wheel take its tole after an hour. I would honestly stick with the Land Cruiser, or try a Range Rover if she can give up some reliability. I thought about going land cruiser or range, had good luck with my 17, but I'm going to give the X7 a try. Test drove M50i last weekend, and wow, what a rig for a family of 5.

I am 5'11, 225lbs, tall wife, todders and car seats in the back. I find the G63 totally comfortable for my 4 hour drive to Vermont friday and back to NYC Sundays. Do it every weekend to ski. Have Hakka3 snowtires on 20" wheels. No fatigue, dead on center cruise control.

Amazing ride. I keep the suspension on Sport the whole drive, Exhaust on or else.
