If you plan to go off-roading once in a while, I would suggest the G500 since in general it will be more durable, have better ground clearence, and the diff-locks will make it easier to negotiate rough terrain.

If you are buying something purely for road use, the Range Rover will handle better on the road. That's not to say the G500 is not fun to drive, but the RR is designed by BMW and will corner better and have a slightly smoother ride.

The other thing to think about are depreciation...your RR will loose value quicker than the MB, and there will be 8-10 Range Rovers on the road for every G500 you see.

It's a toss-up and I can't really tell you what to go with. Both have a lot of style (in their own way) and get a lot of looks. Both are capable off-road vehicles, and they both cost about the same. You might consider waiting for the 2003 G55 AMG. That will be one mean vehicle and will demand respect both on-road and off-road. 349HP, faster 0-60 than the RR, but it still has the off-road capabilities of other G-class vehicles.

The Range Rover will drop in value much quicker. I went to take delivery on a G500 a few months ago and I hadn't realized how small it was. I am a big guy but there wasn't much room. I stayed w/ my 200 Range Rover only b/c it had more space- the G500 is a much more unique vehicle and although the 2003 Range Rover is very refined it isn't quite the exclusivity of the G500. The new Range Rover is also csomething like 4 inches wider and 8-9 inches longer. I am still considering it myself. If you don't need the space- I unfortunately do- go with the G500- much better reliability as well. They have been producing those for eons...

I would buy both haha!!!!
Their both good, its all about your personal interest. You won;t have to worry about reliablity considering BMW has helped in its prouduction for the Range Rover. The Range Rover is very nice looking and larger than the G class. But the Gclass is very roomy in the inside, probably more than the Range Rover, especially int he back. Its roomy because the seats are set high I love that!

-Well good luck in your decision, and post pictures when you get which ever SUV

Even my 2000 is much larger inside than the G500- and most notably in the back seat. I have 52 in shoulders and my shoulders touched the salesman when he went to put his seatbelt on.

It is up to what you want from a SUV??? more...

We have a 2002 G500 for the past 3 months. It now has 3000 miles on it. We love it. But we are starting to see a lot of small annoying things pop up just like our Range Rover 4.0SE...

I have to agree with some post above on interior space and styling. I drove the new2003 Range Rover other day at the local dealership and it is so much more nicer interior and roomier than the G500. Outside looks much bigger than a G500 as well as previous model Range Rover.

The drive is much better on road for Range Rover as well.
However, the new Range Rover will drop the value faster than the G500 and G500 definitely gets a lot more attention and exclusivity.

I am keeping my G500 and the Range Rover 4.0SE for now. I probably will trade in my 4.0SE for the new Range Rover in a year or so, once the value of the new of the new Range Rover comes down.

If I were to own just one... It will be the new 2003 RR

Nice man, i was waiting to hear a report from someone about the new RR. I will have to check it out when it comes to the dealer over here. The thing about the G-class with room is in the rear seat i have noticed it is placed high so there is not much complaint with the leg room but its narrow so that limits space.
