Anyone also drive only in S mode?

I’ve had my w463 G63 for three years now.

Recently I’ve been commuting more on the highway with it as opposed to being in NYC traffic.

one thing I’ve noticed is that on the highway you MUST be in S mode otherwise the truck feels extremely slow. Things like merging on and sometimes overtaking feel very aloof in C mode.

Is this normal for everyone else? Does anyone else only drive in S mode because of this?

I had been habitually shifting into S mode just to disable the annoying ECO Start/Stop function (then I pulled the battery sensor connector to permanently disable it). My understanding is the S mode changes the transmission shifting profile, and leaves you in lower gears when your driving style demands this. C mode activates shut down of some cylinders when not needed, but reactivation is supposed to be instantaneous on demand. Nevertheless, driving in heavy traffic that requires rapid maneuvering is probably best done in S mode, if you're OK with the decreased fuel economy.

95% of the time I kick it into S mode as soon as I start quit up. Sometimes it's a bit too aggressive with the shift points, but it beats the heck out of the sluggishness in C, and the auto-start/stop garbage.

Im told sitting idle on C is not as good either. I normally just drive in S and have gotten used to its stiffer drive. Good luck!

How is it possible to sit idling in C mode with ECO S/S killing the engine, or do I not understand what you're saying?

You can shut off the auto start in C mode. It automatically shuts it off when you go to S mode as well. Does this help?

Is this possible using the "A" button next to the ignition start/stop button? This "A" button on my G has does nothing.

That's exactly how you shut it off. every time the light is green it means the auto shut-off is on. When you turn the car on, you can shut off the auto-start on C and it will not shut the car off even in C.
When you go to S, itll shut off the auto-start automatically.
Keep in mind: my observations been that even in C, and when auto-start is on...there are times the car will not auto-shutoff. i believe the ECU systems calculate the most effecient way and the car shuts-off if it needs to. I recall many time that car is on C and auto start is also is on but the car still is idle and doesnt shut off. If i have to assume its when the car is either on uphill or downhill. Hope this helps!

Your experience is consistent with the owner's manual. As I said, the "A" button on my '19 G550 does nothing but fill an otherwise would-be hole in the dash. The "tech guru" at the dealership would never return my calls or answer my email about this -- my guess is he didn't have a clue about what I was asking. The start/stop function does factor in several parameters such as engine temp and battery charge state, and prevents the engine from shutting off if conditions aren't suitable even though the start/stop is disabled, again as you report. As I indicated earlier in this thread, I just disconnected the battery current sensor so that the system always thinks the battery can't support re-starting, so the start/stop "feature" remains disabled all the time in all drive modes.

No more MB:(
First thing I do is switch to S every time. It's a different ride and far more responsive, also just overall better with the snappier shifts.
