G63 - AAS/Distronic/CEL - Horn Blaring On Its Own

Hey All,

I’ve got a 2014 G63 50k miles that’s newer to me. I have had three G500s in the past and have sorted through most of their issues on my own. The G 63 is obviously a much more advanced machine with a lot more electronic systems involved.

The other day I noticed water dripping into sunroof control area. Dried it and noticed that it stopped leaking so didn’t think much of it (knowing well that it could definitely cause other issues…)

Now I’m Up in Tahoe and noticed that the car was driving weird. CEL and AAS/Distronic messages came on. Car seemed to lose power. Put it back in Park and then back into drive. Got a nice “kick” and then it started driving normally.

This morning went out to diagnose the car further, got in let it warm up, took it for a test drive and everything seems to be shifting and driving as normal. The check engine light is still on obviously, but the distronic and AAS warnings did not come up on the dash.

Drove back to the cabin, parked the car and locked it. Walked up into the house and a few minutes later the car started blaring the horn on its own. Walked out to the car started it up, turned it on, turned it back off and could not get the horns to disengage. Realized that I could disconnect the horn wires through the front grill, but while attempting to do so, the passenger side horn seemed to burn itself out and stopped blaring. Shortly after that, the driver side horn did the same thing.

at this point, my assumption would be that all of these issues are obviously related, I’m assuming that there’s some moisture in the system somewhere causing a short, which would cause the distronic system to disengage as well as the horns to have the issues that they were having.

Any thoughts?

Have you checked the auxiliary battery and also the main battery? Both under the floor in second row. You can take it to an autozone/advance auto and have them check both, relatively easy to do while you are on the road.

Thanks for the tip! I have not yet as I don’t have any tools and am dealing with rain/snow conditions at the moment. If I was home I would have started tearing into things already.

Would the batteries having low power/voltage cause all of the above issues? I’ve had some low voltage issues before but nothing to this extent.

Update: drove the car down the hill into town. Wipers ran erratically and received a wiper malfunction message along with the AAS defective and Distronic Inoperative messages. Car drove weird (didn’t have any power which I’m assuming is limp mode) and didn’t want tos hurt out of 2nd or 3rd. Tested the battery which showed slightly low voltage so replaced the main battery.

Started the car after replacing battery and I could hear the relays clicking off an on. Attempted to reverse and screen glitched from reverse cam back to radio and the car wouldn’t reverse. Played around with N/P/D again and got it to engage and back out.

Drove around the parking lot and decide to park somewhere safe and call AAA. Now time for the ride over the snowy summit back home.

My assumption is that whatever water got in through the sunroof switch area is causing a short or voltage draw and making the entire system glitch. I had similar issues on my silver G500 so I guess I’m not surprised by this.

Any further input is appreciated! If anyone knows how to pry the center cabin/map light off the ceiling in the 2014 G63 I can’t find anything on the forums. Tried the credit card trick but that hasn’t worked yet.

Nope! The time I noticed the water was at home (before I went up to Tahoe) in normal rain. The weird thing is that it stopped dripping… We drove up to Tahoe with no issues, the next day it started throwing weird symptoms and issues.

Quick update. Got the car towed home. It’s not raining finally so I opened the sunroof and tried to diagnose further. Lots of moisture in the sunroof drain pan area as well as behind the cabin light module (above the dash). I actually started the car and drove around with zero issues or warning lights.

I have cleaned the sunroof drains with the long pipe cleaner tool that is 7 feet long as well as blown air down them. Wondering if there is another area I am missing or a better way to remove all moisture from the inside of the car?

Currenlty sitting outside with all windows and sunroof open. Would love some more suggestions or input if anyone has any. Thank you all and happy new year!

You may want to try two of these desiccant bags.

I have used them in an old convertible that would sometimes let water in and fog the windows.

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll try these. My Audi RS3 gets some fog as well. Not sure why I didn’t think of these.
